Bring on the bacon.

Is breakfast really the most important meal of the day? Yep, according to the Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. A new study by medical organization says a simple bagel isn't enough, however. In fact, a big breakfast is the most beneficial as far as burning calories go.

"Our results show that a meal eaten for breakfast, regardless of the amount of calories it contains, creates twice as high diet-induced thermogenesis as the same meal consumed for dinner," said the study's corresponding author, Juliane Richter, M.Sc., Ph.D., of University of Lubeck in Germany. "This finding is significant for all people as it underlines the value of eating enough at breakfast."

It's all because of the way our body expends energy when we digest. Researchers studied 16 men who ate a low-calorie breakfast and high-calorie dinner and vice versa. After the high-calorie breakfast and low-calorie dinner test, scientists found there was a decrease of blood sugar and insulin concentrations following the big breakfast which prevents obesity and high blood sugar in the long run.

"We recommend that patients with obesity as well as healthy people eat a large breakfast rather than a large dinner to reduce body weight and prevent metabolic diseases," Richter said.

Furthermore, eating a low-calorie breakfast also increased appetite, specifically for sweets, throughout the day.
