Catriona Gray is Miss Universe 2018 and the fourth Filipino beauty queen to bring home the crown. Below, we take a trip down memory lane as we recall Cat’s predecessors in the history of Miss Universe.
Gloria Diaz, Miss Universe 1969
Gloria Diaz, the first Filipina to win the crown, perhaps bagged the title for the sassy way she answered the final question. When asked how she would entertain the first man who landed on the moon upon his arrival back on earth, the beauty queen said, “Oh, just the same things I do. I think if he has been on the moon for so long, I think when he comes over he wants to change, I guess.” Her practical and real approach in offering hospitality of the said guest bested the other girls.
Margarita Moran, Miss Universe 1973
Meanwhile, Margarita Moran's Filipino roots shone with her warm answer to the question: If you had one million dollars what would you do with it? Margie shared that she'd buy a big house to provide a home for all her loved ones. How sweet!
Pia Wurtzbach, Miss Universe 2015
Pia Wurtzbach's win at Miss Universe 2015 was memorable not becuase of Steve Harvey's blunder, but for her empowering message to Filipinas. Pia said that being Miss Universe was both an honor and a responsibility wherein she hoped to show the universe that she is confidently beautiful with a heart. Way to go, Pia!
Catriona Gray, Miss Universe 2018
Catriona Gray continues the Filipina legacy in Miss Universe history as she answered with grit and genuine love for her country and the entire world. Cat looked back to her work in Tondo slums and used this as a pivotal point for her advocacy for the welfare of the children around the world. With the line, "I would bring this aspect as Miss Universe to see situations with a silver lining and to assess where I could give something, where I could provide something as a spokesperson," she only proves that we Filipinos are optimists who choose to see the good in all obstacles. Well said, Cat!
