IU has been in the entertainment industry for almost two decades, and as a result, her supporters have become well acquainted with her nuances. Apart from being a talented performer and gifted actress, she has also been open about her health journey.

She has a famously small appetite, and her recent appearance in a variety show has confirmed it.

IU on Her “Bird-Like” Eating Habits

Last April 22, IU appeared alongside her “Perfect Crown” leading man, Byeon Woo Seok, in an episode of "You In Radio," a YouTube talk show hosted by Yoo In Na. A casual conversation led them to reveal the meal they had eaten that day.

Woo Seok shared that he had a chicken burger and kimchi fried rice, while IU drew surprised reactions from the audience when she said she had only eaten an apple and blueberries. She recognized her “bird-like” eating habits, and also joked that if her stomach were to grumble, she’s confident that the editors will remove the sounds.

It’s not only her food choices that have sparked reactions from her supporters, but also her manner of eating them. IU's recent guesting reminded netizens of a separate appearance she made in a 2024 YouTube video with comedian Moon Sang Hoon.

There, the South Korean star shared that she chews her food extremely thoroughly—specifically up to 150 times per bite. By eating more slowly, she feels full even with a small amount of food. “Even my dentist tells me to stop chewing so much because it can strain my teeth,” she said.

While these habits may seem unconventional—even worrisome—they actually count as progress for the 32-year-old. In 2013, the “IU diet challenge” took over the internet. She revealed her extreme diet plan on an SBS show: one apple for breakfast, two sweet potatoes for lunch, and a protein shake for dinner. Given how this helped her lose five kilograms in five days, many tried her diet and shared their progress online.

The following year, she opened up about dealing with bulimia and anxiety, and taking the initiative to care for her physical and mental health better.

It must be noted, though, that IU herself had quit the extreme diet that had once gone viral and had discouraged her supporters from trying it. She has also been adopting healthier habits, such as eating higher-quality meals and pursuing her passion for yoga.
