A spritz of perfume should be the finishing touch, not the foundation. Smelling good should feel second nature, a natural extension of yourself rather than an occasional indulgence. Fragrances will always have the power to transport us—our favorites can brighten a mood in seconds—but true scent identity goes beyond the bottles lined on our shelves. It’s about cultivating habits and choices that let you carry an effortless, lasting freshness all on your own.
Ahead, we share 10 ways to do so!
10 Ways to Smell Great Without Using Perfume
Start with the basics: a good shower.
Many keys to smelling good are found in everyday hygiene. It doesn’t matter if your day calls for a long shower or keeps you limited to a quick rinse, as long as you allot focus to the body parts with the most sweat glands, such as your underarm and groin areas.
Having days for exfoliation helps, too, as it physically removes dead skin cells and bacteria that contribute to odor-causing elements. You can also opt for soaps, body washes, and other products that come in a scent you like!
Clean your hair, too.
Sometimes, it’s our hair that leaves a fragrant trace when we go walking around town. A good wash thoroughly removes dirt and oil, leaving you with a fresh feeling. Remember to concentrate the shampoo on your scalp before moving on to the rest of your tresses.

Layer with lotion.
One way to make your scent last after a shower is by following it with a scented lotion or moisturizer (bonus points if it complements that of your body wash). The secret here is to apply it while your skin is still damp. Like a sponge, moist skin will absorb and lock it in better.
Wear deodorant.
It’s old and basic advice for a reason. A new level of confidence unveils when you know you smell good—wearing perfume or not. Wearing deodorant keeps you fresh, and it’s simply a staple in everyone’s daily routine. A wide variety is available, from those with clinical strength to those made with only natural ingredients, and what matters is you opt for one that works best for you.
Explore essential oils.
A product that synchronously makes you feel good and smell great? Best believe it’s already in our kits. Essential oils enhance your mood, reduce your stress, and heighten your aroma game—and they do the same for others who catch a whiff of it. They come in numerous scent families as well, like musky, woody, and minty to name a few.

Carry a face mist.
Mists can provide an instant boost of hydration and refreshment anytime, anywhere. Apart from revitalizing your skin, they can provide a relaxing olfactory sensation, especially when they come in your preferred scent. Did you know you can also spritz them on your hair to keep the strands smelling fresh?

Evaluate your diet.
The food we eat is also related to the natural scent we emit. It might be good to know that red meat, dairy, garlic, and anything spicy can contribute to unpleasant odor. This is not to say you have to rethink everything you consume, though. Little changes like drinking more water and having less processed food already make a difference.

Exercise regularly.
It probably feels odd to see “sweating” and “smelling good” in the same sentence, but exercising more frequently actually improves your body’s natural musk. It’s like an overall detox from your mind to your body.

Let your clothes do the talking.
Synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon can trap heat and cling to odor. Natural fibers like cotton and linen, on the other hand, perform better at regulating body temperatures. This only adds to the reasons why you should consider where you’re going when it comes to choosing what you’ll wear for the day.
Regardless of your clothes’ materials, there are several ways to keep them smelling fresh as if they just came straight from the laundry. Some of these are by spritzing them with linen spray, hanging dried lavender in your closet, and putting scent-drenched cotton balls inside your drawers.
Sleep in scented sheets.
What better way to have an evening of peaceful slumber than by lying on clean sheets and enjoying your favorite aroma? Pillow sprays can enhance the scent of your space, and by extension, of you.
