There may be photos collecting dust in your camera roll, never to see the light of day, and it’s all because of one thing: a foundation mismatch. It’s a common makeup mishap to use a foundation that may be too light or too dark for your skin, making your body look like it paid a visit to the beach while your face stayed indoors, or vice-versa. Fortunately, there are now many ways to avoid experiencing this, so you can step out with confidence and look back at your memories with ease.

How to Determine Your Foundation Shade
Wearing the right foundation shade creates a seamless and natural look, regardless of coverage. It’s a crucial element for enhancing your complexion and achieving a unified appearance that makes your makeup seem just like second skin.

When shopping for foundation, match it with your body rather than your face. According to professional makeup artist Jason Delos Reyes, it’s best to swatch foundation on your jaw, helping you visualize how it will look and blend from your face to your neck and your body.

Knowing your undertones is a significant contributor as well. You can have the shade of foundation that goes well with your skin tone, but with a mismatched undertone, it will still end up looking not quite right. There are primarily three categories for undertones: cool, warm, and neutral.

Determining yours is as easy as observing the colors of the veins on your wrists. If their hues lean towards blue and purple, you have a cool undertone. Green veins would mean warm, while a mix of blue and green would mean olive. If the colors of your veins appear to be a combination of all these, or if they’re generally hard to determine, then you have a neutral one. Knowing this would avoid a foundation match that is either ashy or orange.

Another way to find the right foundation shade is to simply give it some time. Swatch it and let it sit for a few hours, and observe if it oxidizes, if it looks natural under the sun, and so on.
