If your foundation still creases by noon, looks patchy in daylight, or mysteriously separates by mid-afternoon, it’s probably not just the product. According to celebrity makeup artist Jason Delos Reyes, most foundation mishaps come down to how we prep, choose, and apply it.

At the launch of Jane Iredale’s Skintuition SPF 30 Radiance-Boosting Liquid Foundation at Rustan’s, Jason led a masterclass that set the record straight on some of the most common base mistakes—and how to correct them. From matching your formula to your skin type to the one spot you should actually swatch your shade on, his advice reframes foundation as both a science and an art.

Makeup Artist-Approved Foundation Tips, According to Jason Delos Reyes
Tip #1
Choose the Right Formula for Your Skin Type
The first mistake many make? Picking a foundation based solely on finish or trend. “It’s important to know your foundation formulas,” Jason explains. “Water-based and silicone-based products generally work well for combination skin. Oil-based foundations, on the other hand, are best for dry skin.”

The takeaway: don’t just swatch—study the ingredients. Understanding your skin’s behavior can help prevent common issues like pilling, excess shine, or patchiness throughout the day.
Tip #2
Prep Your Skin for a Flawless Base

Jason emphasized that skin prep isn’t one-size-fits-all. “Prepping your skin before applying foundation is crucial,” he shares, “but also consider the type of moisturizers you’re using. Water-based moisturizers pair best with water foundations, while creams suit silicone and oil-based formulas.”

This pairing ensures your foundation sits on the skin without slipping off or caking up, especially in unpredictable climates like ours. Base harmony starts with what’s underneath.

Tip #3
Match Your Shade on Your Chest, Not Your Jawline

If you’re still swatching foundation on your jawline or wrist, Jason says it’s time to update your technique. “Foundation shade matching should be done on your chest,” he advises. “Pick at least three shades you think will work, and test them side-by-side.”

Why the chest, you ask? It balances out the sun-exposed areas of the face with the often more even-toned body, making for a more unified and natural finish—especially when wearing off-shoulder or sleeveless pieces.

Tip #4
Consider the Weather When Deciding Your Foundation Finish
Foundation isn’t seasonal in concept, but it should be in practice. “Those with oily skin may benefit from a matte finish in humid conditions,” Jason notes. “Dry skin types might prefer hydrating formulas with a dewy glow, particularly in colder months.”

He also adds that finish and coverage preferences should align with both lifestyle and weather. Jane Iredale's Skintuition formula—infused with SPF 30 and designed for a radiant finish—caters to skin that craves breathable, buildable luminosity, making it a smart year-round pick for tropical climates.

Tip #5
Always Test Foundation in Natural Light
Perhaps his simplest yet most overlooked advice? “Test foundation in natural light,” Jason says. Artificial store lighting can skew perception—what looks seamless indoors might appear too light or too ashy outdoors. Stepping outside for a quick daylight check can be the difference between a passable match and a perfect one.
