Why Your Foundation Isn’t Working, According to a Makeup Artist
If your foundation still creases by noon, looks patchy in daylight, or mysteriously separates by mid-afternoon, it’s probably not just the product. According to celebrity makeup artist Jason Delos Reyes, most foundation mishaps come down to how we prep, choose, and apply it.
Jason emphasized that skin prep isn’t one-size-fits-all. “Prepping your skin before applying foundation is crucial,” he shares, “but also consider the type of moisturizers you’re using. Water-based moisturizers pair best with water foundations, while creams suit silicone and oil-based formulas.”
This pairing ensures your foundation sits on the skin without slipping off or caking up, especially in unpredictable climates like ours. Base harmony starts with what’s underneath.

If you’re still swatching foundation on your jawline or wrist, Jason says it’s time to update your technique. “Foundation shade matching should be done on your chest,” he advises. “Pick at least three shades you think will work, and test them side-by-side.”
Why the chest, you ask? It balances out the sun-exposed areas of the face with the often more even-toned body, making for a more unified and natural finish—especially when wearing off-shoulder or sleeveless pieces.
