Jonathan Anderson's imprint on Loewe is unmistakable. During his tenure as creative director—which concluded this 2025, as signaled by his new gig at Dior—he pioneered designs that any sartorialist can immediately attribute to the maison. His work teetered on the offbeat, yet it remained intentional and loyal to Loewe's Spanish heritage.

Even the untrained eye can appreciate his unique vision upon viewing the slate of bags he's crafted for the house. Loewe, after all, was founded as a leather goods company, and Jonathan's approach banked on this identity. Before he signed off as the brand's head honcho of design, he introduced a new player to their bag game. Meet the Madrid, a clutchable tribute to where it all started for the label.

The Rundown:

A (Recent) History of the Loewe Madrid Bag

To state the obvious, the Puzzle bag remains to be Jonathan's most popular brainchild. In its decade-long existence, it reshaped what a luxury tote can be, subsequently being a career-defining piece of work for its designer. But of course, Jonathan's genius didn't stop at just one milestone. In between obscure references and multi-textile approaches, he planted his work in Loewe's history of precise craftsmanship. What appeared to be zany was 100% functional, and what looked ordinary actually had layers of quirk to it.

The Madrid actualizes all of these facets. Debuted at the Château de Vincennes in Paris, the languid, trapezoidal piece was a scene-stealer at the brand's Spring/Summer 2025 show. As models entered the catwalk in tees fashioned out of feathers or cumbersome empire-waist dresses, they also flaunted the unassuming carrier. It rested on one's shoulder with a strap, or was simply clutched through its handle.

The Madrid, unsurprisingly, is named after the city where Loewe was born. It's Jonathan's way of honoring the brand and its story of elevating familiarities, such as a leather tote. Up until today, Loewe's leather ateliers are still based in Spain, where each sheet of calfskin is delicately chosen and treated to become the it-bags of today.

It's a piece that can accompany you throughout a bustling city—with an accordion-style opening and a durable interior, it promises to be one of those bags you can throw your life into. Of course, it boasts of a sleek appearance, characterized by curved edges, puffed shoulder straps, and gold Pebble fastening. Its zipper also closes a bit asymmetrically, which one can interpret as a nod to Jonathan's cheekiness as a designer.

The medium iteration comes at 23 cm in height, 28.5 cm in width, and 11 cm in depth, making it a good option for days you don't want to carry too much, but still require the essentials.

The large version, with measurements of 24 cm in height, 33 cm in width, and 12.5 cm in depth, is what we'd consider as workhorse bag. Since it can comfortably house a laptop or an iPad, it's qualified to be an office carrier. We love functional arm candy!

As of press time, Loewe has also released an exclusive roster of Madrids designed with the work of German artist Anni Albers. One of the 20th century's enduring artisans, her signature weaving and pattern work can be worn through a medium-sized Madrid bag.

Style Stars Wearing the Loewe Madrid Bag

Since its appearance on the runway in 2024, the Madrid has already made rounds globally. On Philippine shores, it's already gotten the seal of approval from Preview 30 Icon and industry stalwart Liz Uy, who teamed a dark burgundy version with an amped up white top and jeans combo.

As expected, friends and ambassadors of Loewe have also been smitten by the Madrid. Thai sweetheart Baifern and Canadian screen star Taylor Russell couldn't resist earthy olive-hued takes on it. Namtan Tipnaree and Milk Pansa, both banner stars of Thailand's girls' love genre, also leaned into the tote's palatable style with laidback get-ups. The same goes for Japanese fashion insiders Yoyo Cao and Mirei Kiritani, who kept it clean and casual with their Madrids.
