"I feel guilty for taking the seat that was allotted for somebody else, like the press... I don't mind being second or third [choice], as long as I'm invited as myself."

"I feel guilty for taking the seat that was allotted for somebody else, like the press... I don't mind being second or third [choice], as long as I'm invited as myself."

It's no secret that Heart Evangelista has built an enduring presence in global fashion weeks. Over the last few years, the 39-year-old actress has been recognized as a top global celebrity for fashion, alongside other A-list celebrities worldwide. But behind the glitz and glamor of her fashion week journey is actually a story of hard work, which entailed starting from the ground up.

Heart Evangelista Talks About Entering Fashion Week Through the “Hard Route”

In her "Back in Milan" vlog posted on June 22, Heart candidly shared how she took the "hard route" to break into fashion week. Having started in the showbiz industry during her early teens, Heart is no stranger to the equally cutthroat nature of the fashion world.

"When one episode of your soap opera doesn't do well in terms of rating, you're gonna be axed out. I grew up with just being on this race," she narrated. Nonetheless, Heart set out on her fashion career purely out of her love for fashion and style. "I entered fashion week because it wasn't a job. It was a passion," she expressed.

To Heart, fashion is a form of self-expression, and attending fashion events allows her to do just that. Still, Heart emphasized that she took the "hard route" to secure those highly coveted front-row seats.

In the beginning, Heart explained that she would sometimes get invited as press, which entailed her doing interviews and taking content for a magazine. But as she steadily graced fashion weeks season after season, Heart has made it a point to establish her identity with the brands. "If you want a relationship with them [the brands], I truly want them to know who I am," she said.

Heart further explained why she now veers away from attending fashion shows on behalf of a publication, saying that members of the press are equally deserving to attend these events too. "Basically, I feel guilty for taking the seat that was allotted for somebody else, like the press," she explained. "This is the golden rule."

According to her, those writing or editing an article about fashion shows should be able to bask in the energy of the event for inspiration. "It's not authentically me if I'm the one [going to the shows] just to take pictures [and] interviews," she candidly shared.

Now a fixture at the "big three" fashion weeks, namely Milan, Paris, and New York, Heart reiterates the importance of representing herself. "I don't mind being second or third [choice], as long as I'm invited as myself and I have a good relationship with the brand," she affirmed.
