Giddy up, girls! Dior's Saddle bag is back on the scene 20 years since its first release.
The house's creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri reintroduced the iconic bag for the luxury brand's Fall/Winter 2018 collection. “The Saddle bag is one of those emblematic pieces that always manages to remain contemporary,” she explained in an interview with British Vogue. “It's also one of the codes that symbolises Dior's recent history.”
The smart satchel was originally designed by the fashion house's former artistic director John Galliano in 1999 for the Spring 2000 collection, essentially capturing his penchant for injecting subversive gimmicks in his work. In the case of the Saddle bag, it's equestrian classicism meets logomania.
The slung-over bag instantly gained It-bag status after '90s icons Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, and Sienna Miller started wearing it, with the desire to have a piece of the famous designer's aesthetic within their reach. In fact, it's also considered as part of Carrie Bradshaw's signature look on Sex and the City!
Today's versions include the iconic Dior logo print, some in solid-hued leather pieces and others in '70s-inspired patchwork and beaded styles. They all bear the iconic gold ‘D’ charm hanging from the bag, and its straps are customizable and can be switched out for thick canvas straps.
The bag's reissue also underlines the power of the luxury house's marketing blitz. With all the fashion influencers suddenly wearing the bag again, the web search for the Saddle bag on fashion search engine Lyst shot up to 1000%, says Katy Lubin, communications director of the site.
Its mother company, LVMH says in an interview that the success of the bag's social media blitzkrieg can be owed to three things. "It’s instantly recognizable on Instagram, plays into the logomania trend, and it comes with a serious dose of early-aughts nostalgia.”
