If there’s a foolproof way in putting a good outfit together, it would probably be sticking to the classics. After all, one of the surefire indicators of good style is timelessness. But if you try to take two classic pieces such as a dress and a blazer, things can get tricky, especially when there are different cuts and silhouettes involved. This shouldn’t stop you from pulling off this outfit though, as many of our favorite style stars have repeatedly rocked this style formula recently. Case in point: Check out these 10 stylish ways on how you can pull off the blazer + dress look

1. Look preppy in plaid.

While plaid is considered a classic print, it’s commonly associated with the preppy look, which we fashion girls have come to love. Take style cues from Laureen Uy on how to rock a plaid blazer over a plain black full skirt dress and a pair of tasseled brogues while still looking chic. To avoid looking bookish, add the right accessories like fishnet stockings and a statement bag like Laureen did.

2. Go monochrome.

Stick to a single hue and make yourself look tall and streamlined just like Verniece Enciso. Bid the morning rush goodbye since you don’t need to second guess if your outfit will match when you choose a blazer and a dress of the same shade. If you want to add a little shock factor to your outfit, opt for an interesting detail like a dress with a side slit to show a little bit of skin.

3. Cinch it with a belt.

Belt over a blazer look? Yes, please! Cop an hourglass bod immediately when you accessorize a relaxed blazer over a loose dress with a statement belt. Make use of a studded one like Heart Evangelista’s to add some edge and a more defined silhouette to your outfit.

4. Complete the outfit with a pair of boots.

Although usually reserved for the tropics, celebrity stylist Liz Uy shows us how to effortlessly rock a maxi dress (and a metallic one at that) during cooler weather. Keep the look easy and casual by adding a boxy blazer and a pair of ankle boots. If you’re traveling somewhere cold soon, toss this outfit in your suitcase and you’re good to go.

5. Choose crisp cotton for the office.

For an office-appropriate version of the blazer with dress fit, try picking out pieces in crisp cotton fabric. Wear the right accessories and take inspiration from fashion blogger Lizzy Hadfield who added a men’s watch, a black handbag, and a pair of loafers to smarten up her style.

6. Borrow from the boys.

If you think the blazer with dress ensemble is too stuffy for casual activities then you might want to reconsider. One of the best ways to dress down a slinky silk dress is by wearing a boyfriend blazer over it. Draw inspiration from Danish model Cecilie Moosgaard who looked so effortlessly chic while out and about. Let your hair down and wear it with slip on flats and you’re equipped to run errands in style.

7. Wear it with strappy sandals for the summer.

A summer in the city calls for a cute and ditsy floral dress, but with Manila’s borderline freezing malls, you might still need a jacket. Try adding an oversized blazer over it just like blogger Lindsey Holland did while surviving London in the heat. To stay true to the spirit of summer, strap on some sandals and toss your hair into a messy bun, too.

8. Dare to be bold in mixed prints and textures.

Since a blazer and a dress are two classic style pieces, be brave and wear them in bold prints and interesting textures. You can wear a glittery dress with a snakeskin jacket while still having a cohesive look. A perfect example is Nicole Andersson’s NYFW showstopping 'fit. Her secret? She paired a statement jacket with neutral-toned pieces. Oh, and don’t forget a great amount of confidence, too!

9. Cover up a rather revealing dress.

While some of us are all about the hubadera life, sometimes, some events call for a little bit of coverage. But if your heart sings to wear a dreamy see-through tulle dress, go ahead and embrace it; just wear a tailored blazer on top. Take style cues from one of our favorite French girls Camille Charriere who added an elegant cream blazer over her dreamy Dior tulle dress. Of course, don’t forget to wear something underneath!

10. Slip on some sneakers for a comfy weekend outfit

If you can’t forego comfort in the name of style, it’s a good idea to mix casual and dressy pieces in one go. Just like UK blogger Emma Hill, you can rock a flirty leopard print dress with a blazer for occasions that require a casual fit. Go ahead and pair it with your trusty white sneakers for maximum ease.
