A veteran designer to the stars known for his exquisite architecturally inspired designs, Francis Libiran is the go-to of celebrities for a custom eveningwear to be worn to the grandest events. The ABS-CBN Ball 2018 was no exception as Francis once again delivered glamorous frocks and suits on the red carpet, donned by his closest clients who each meticulously worked with him to achieve their desired looks.
"It’s like this back-and-forth process. During our first appointment, the celebrities (and their stylists) discuss with me and my team the style that they would like to go for," Francis tells Preview. "In turn, I suggest fabrics, materials, details, and silhouettes that I think would go well with them and the style they’re aiming for. We throw ideas and brainstorm until we can come up with a design that’s perfect for them."
We talk more to the designer below about his creative process for the ABS-CBN Ball.

How do you decide on which stars you’ll be dressing up?
"I always work with people who are close to me and who represent my brand. I’m very grateful to have these friends (celebrities and stylists) with whom I’ve built relationships and have trusted me in designing their outfits for special events like this."

How much involvement did your clients have in the creation of their outfits?
"Whenever I design something for my clients, they are involved every step of the way. I want them to feel confident in what they’re wearing. I ask them what they’d be comfortable wearing, what color they’d like to try and make suggestions on what I think would go well with their personality and personal style. At the end of the day, we always want to make the person we’re designing for look good and feel great."

Is there a signature Francis Libiran mark that you leave on each of your designs?
"I think, because of my knowledge and background in architecture, most of my designs turn out to be wearable art pieces. A lot of love is put into each and every piece."
Seeing as the dress code has been lifted, did you find any difference in designing for the ABS-CBN Ball as opposed to the past Star Magic Balls?
"There’s more freedom in designing without the dress code. We got to experiment more with different colors and fabrics, and play around with silhouettes."
Was there a particular standout fabric that you made use of the most for this year?
"For this year’s ball, we chose fabrics with texture. You’ll be seeing a lot of unique suits made of these beautiful brocades and textured wools and for the ladies we used luxurious fabrics and custom embroidery."
