Evening gowns and national costumes that even the most snobbish fashion girls approve of.

First of all, we’re glad we no longer have early 2015 problems.

Remember the time when we’d see Pinay beauty queens in looks that are: a) not made by fellow Filipinos, b) incongruent to our culture, c) ill-fitting, or d) all of the above?

That’s all behind us now.

Ever since Pia Wurtzbach insisted on wearing Filipino designs (Oliver Tolentino during the preliminaries and Albert Andrada on finals night) during her stint on the Miss Universe stage, the demand for local designers to create gowns and costumes for our beauty queens is at a high once again. It is all reminiscent of an era ago when the creations of Pitoy Moreno, Auggie Cordero and Inno Sotto were on the backs of every kind of couture-wearing girl in fashion, society, and pageant circles.

Good times are here again, don’t you think?

Here, our very own list of pageant looks that are fashion-girl approved, worn by our local beauty queens and foreign ones, too. Each one is well-made, well-styled, and most important of all, designed by a Filipino.

Maxine Medina in Rhett Eala, 65th Miss Universe National Costume Parade

Rhett’s modern, vinta-inspired number inspired Jewelmer to create a modern headdress fit for a modern beauty queen. Have we said modern enough?

Pia Wurtzbach in Michael Cinco, 65th Miss Universe Farewell Walk

In the same shade of “Pia blue” as her Albert Andrada dress, she sashayed unforgettably as the official Miss Universe in a dreamy pre-Kira Kira dress for one last time.

Demi Leigh Nel-Peters in Rajo Laurel, Miss Universe Tour by Front Row

Rajo was inspired by Venus, the goddess of beauty, when she thought up this design for the reigning Miss Universe.

Iris Mittenaere in Michael Cinco, Miss Universe 2017 Farewell Walk

Iris must have taken notes from her predecessor Pia when she tapped Michael Cinco to also create her farewell walk dress. She decided well.

Rachel Peters in Val Taguba, Miss Universe 2017 Preliminaries

Rachel wowed us more in this skin-flattering gold number than the powder blue confection she wore to the finals (also by Val). The color and silhouette make for a killer combination.

Kylie Verzosa in Rhett Eala, Miss International 2017 Photo Shoot

Kylie pulled from Rhett’s archive of painterly prints for one of her last photo shoots as the reigning Miss International. The result is part-queenly, part-kawaii.

Laura Lehmann in Mark Bumgarner, Miss World Philippines 2017 Finals

Scarlet proved to be Laura’s winning color at the local competition that gave the change to represent the country in Miss World.

Elizabeth Clenci in Jearson D, Miss Grand International 2017 National Costume Parade

Elizabeth’s T’boli princess dress pays accurate homage to South Cotabato, the “Land of the Dream Weavers.” Most of the time, it’s best to stick to tradition than leave things to the imagination.

Mariel de Leon in John Herrera, Miss International 2017 Pre-pageant Activities

The keywords to successful styling for beauty queen and budding actress Mariel de Leon are princess, sweet, and classic. John captured all these in this blue number.

Katarina Rodriguez in Francis Libiran in preparation for Miss Intercontinental

All eyes are on fashion girl Katarina as she competes at the contest that closes out 2017 beauty pageant season. This likeness of hers in fiery Francis Libiran seems a good sign.

Pia Wurtzbach in Michael Leyva, Miss Universe 2017 Finals

Pia gets points for letting go of overt beauty queen styling aka the Pageant Patty look as a judge in the last edition of Miss Universe. She also gets bonus points for the en pointe Patrick Starr makeup that went with her look.

Maxine Medina in Rhett Eala, 65th Miss Universe Preliminaries

This green, fringed number from Rhett Eala singlehandedly summarizes the best bits of beauty queen styling in 2017: non-traditional, unconventional, a modern take on pretty.
