When calm, peace, and balance become increasingly difficult to find externally, it may be time to look inward. Meditation is a practice designed to guide one's return to self. Rooted in early civilizations, it remains widely practiced today.
In a meditative state, one enters a space of thoughtless awareness. You are mindful of your surroundings, yet not tethered to any single thought. You are conscious, but unburdened.
Reaching that kind of stillness, however, is easier said than done. Over thousands of years, meditation has evolved into various forms that tap into different aspects of our being, allowing each person to discover what resonates most.
Ahead, transformational life and energy mentor Libni Fortuna walks us through the meditative experience of sound baths.
What Is a Sound Bath?
“A sound bath is an immersive experience where you are gently surrounded by vibration and frequency through instruments such as crystal singing bowls, chimes, and other harmonic tools.” In her practice, Libni primarily uses crystal sound bowls tuned to different frequencies that correspond to the chakra system.
For the uninitiated, the chakra system is an ancient energy framework that suggests the body has seven main chakras aligned along the spine. These are considered energy centers, and their openness and alignment are believed to influence the state of our nerves, organs, and overall energy—ultimately affecting both emotional and physical well-being.
Libni further explains the practice: “When the bowls are played, their vibrations travel through the air and into the body. Because the human body is made up of about 70 percent water, it responds very naturally to vibration.”
Consider it as a reset for your nervous system. “In a world where there is so much noise, overstimulation, and internal dissonance, a sound bath helps bring you back into resonance with yourself,” Libni tells Preview.
“It’s like coming home to your center.”
How Do Frequencies Work in a Sound Bath?
The instruments used in a sound bath each emit specific frequencies that are measured in Hertz. As these vibrations move through the body, they begin to influence our physiological and emotional states.
Libni explained, “When we are stressed, our nervous system is often in a sympathetic state, which is fight or flight. Sound therapy supports activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the rest and digest state. This is where healing, digestion, integration, and repair happen.”
There is no single fixed frequency for every sound bath, as bowls, instruments, and tunings carry different ones. For an immersive and resonant experience, these are best curated based on the intention of the individual or the group.
“In my practice, I often integrate hypnotherapy, meditation, and breathwork before the sound bath,” Libni shares. “This prepares the nervous system and opens the subconscious, allowing the sound to integrate more deeply.”
It is important to note that what is happening physiologically is not mystical. Rather, “it is the body responding to patterned sound and rhythm, which humans have used for regulation and healing across cultures for thousands of years.”
What Are the Benefits of Experiencing a Sound Bath?
Sound baths hold various intentions in relation to realignment and regulations. They calm the nervous system, and reassures you that you are allowed—or you were meant to—take the time to pause and breathe. A sound bath is synonymous to a safe space, where you can release everything you have been holding in, finally giving yourself the room to turn off your survival mode, let go, and just be.
“The main intention in the spaces I hold is to bring you back to yourself. To quiet the mental noise. To create stillness in the body. To allow your nervous system to soften.”
The benefits of experiencing a sound bath include:
• Deep relaxation
• Nervous system regulation
• Emotional release
• Mental clarity
• Improved sleep
• A deeper connection to self
The experience is generally safe and gentle, but its immediate results vary from person to person. Based on Libni’s observations as a leader herself, “Most people experience deep relaxation. Some may experience emotional release, lightheadedness, or fatigue afterward, especially if the body is processing stress or stored emotions. This is usually temporary and part of regulation.” Given our individual differences, our bodies’ reactions differ as well, but they all share the same goal of restoring balance within.
What Should You Expect From Your First Sound Bath?
“For first-timers, expect stillness.”
Libni begins her sessions by guiding participants into meditation, which helps them land in the space and feel safe. Once the body feels grounded, they embark into the sound journey.
Sessions purely for a sound bath typically last around 30 minutes, while integrated sessions with meditation or other modalities may be longer. As for how frequent one should attend sound baths, Libni recommends going weekly or bi-weekly, saying, “Think of it as giving yourself a regular reset. Just as we maintain our physical health, our nervous system also benefits from consistent regulation.”
Your first sound bath will be memorable. As a matter of fact, Libni recalled details from her first experience, which was in Australia during a retreat. It was a trauma release breathwork session, and the sound bath came after as an integration.
“I am very auditory by nature, and music has always grounded me. During that experience, I felt myself deeply drawn to the bowls. The practitioner used multiple instruments, and it created this beautiful landing space after intense breathwork. It felt like recalibration.”
She went on to lead a sound bath session for her own retreat. “Energy work is sacred to me, and I could not fully trust outsourcing that part of the space.” With this, she invested in her own bowls and learned to facilitate them. “The bowls are simply tools,” she said.
Since then, she has been utilizing sound to complement her work in hypnotherapy, trauma release, inner child healing, and shadow work. She concludes, “It is a beautiful way to recalibrate after deep emotional processing.”
