Everybody loves a good Pilates session—but have you heard of Lagree?

Pilates has long been valued for its visible effects on the body. With consistent practice, devotees often report improved posture and the gradual development of lean muscle. Typically performed on a Reformer machine, the discipline centers on slow, controlled movement guided by structured breathing patterns and core-focused routines.

If you’re looking to change up your regimen and try something that still delivers great results, Lagree may be worth exploring.

While Pilates relies on equipment such as the Reformer, Cadillac, or Wunda Chair, Lagree uses the specialized Megaformer—a machine that features a wider carriage and adjustable resistance settings.

What Is Lagree?

Lagree is a high-intensity, low-impact training method that merges elements of Pilates, strength conditioning, and cardio on a Megaformer machine. The 45-minute workout emphasizes slow, controlled movements that keep muscles under continuous tension, with the goal of developing strength, endurance, and flexibility.

Workouts are designed to engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously, targeting the core, upper body, lower body, and cardiovascular system within a single sequence.

Movements are typically performed with four- to ten-second counts to maximize muscle fiber activation and induce what Lagree refers to as “second-stage muscle failure”—the point at which muscles experience intense fatigue.

This stage is often noticeable when muscles begin to shake or tremble due to extreme exertion and the gradual breakdown of slow-twitch fibers. Ultimately, muscle growth is stimulated when proper form is maintained during this phase.

Lagree was developed by French-American trainer Sebastien Lagree in Los Angeles in 1998. The method was conceived as a higher-intensity alternative to traditional Pilates.

Seeking faster, more targeted results, Lagree combined Pilates principles with elements of bodybuilding, emphasizing time under tension and deliberate pacing to strengthen muscles and improve stamina.

To support the method, he designed specialized equipment, beginning with the Proformer and eventually leading to the patented Megaformer used in studios today. The Lagree system is now practiced in more than 500 studios worldwide.
