Kim Seon Ho’s upcoming film Sad Tropics has been gaining traction ever since its announcement last year. Apart from being the actor’s much-awaited film debut, Filipinos have taken interest in the project particularly because it’s set to feature a half-Filipino as the lead character.
ICYMI, the production team finally announced its lead star last November, and taking on the mantle is rookie actor Kang Tae Joo. As per reports, the 26-year-old beat out over 1000 other hopefuls in the audition process.
Tae Joo made his acting debut in 2020 when he landed a guest appearance in the OCN fantasy-thriller Missing: The Other Side. He followed it up a year later with a main role in the Naver TV-produced web series Nara’s Marvelous Days. The romance drama centers around a distraught woman who loses her self-confidence when her longtime boyfriend breaks up with her.
In the same year, Tae Joo also played a supporting character in the Netflix comedy series Hello, Me! as a manager. Suffice to say, Sad Tropics might well be his big break.
The film will follow Tae Joo as a still unnamed young man born with a Filipino mother and a Korean father. Abandoned by the latter at a young age, he takes his boxing dreams to South Korea, determined to find his estranged dad. His arrival in the country takes a dire turn, however, when he finds himself suddenly embroiled in some bad business.
While it’s still unclear who Seon Ho will play in the movie, he and Tae Joo will be joined by veteran actors Go Ara and Kim Kang Woo.
Sad Tropics began filming last December 2020. At the helm of production is director Park Hoon Jung, best known for his work in the movies New World and The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion, which stars Kim Da Mi and Choi Woo Shik.
The upcoming film is reportedly the only project Seon Ho will be partaking in this 2022.
