Inside every smartphone is a museum of a thousand pictures, captured and exhibited within minutes—or even seconds. As efficient as this may be, it undeniably contributes to a sense of fatigue in today’s fast-paced world.

In contrast, gadgets from earlier decades demanded more time, patience, and physical connection. A digital camera delivers a distinct look, but requires extra steps before you can finally view and share the images. Shooting on film goes even further, denying instant gratification altogether. It’s a tactile process that urges you to slow down, create with intention, and fully engage with the moment. The results? Photographs that carry unmistakable aesthetics—unique colors, rich textures, and an authenticity that’s difficult to replicate.

Filipino Personalities Dabbling in Film Photography

Trusting the process and letting go of perfection just might be the breath of fresh air that you need. Take inspiration from these Filipino personalities who capture their memories in good ol’ film!

Andres and Atasha Muhlach

Andres and Atasha Muhlach share many interests—photography included. Trust the two stylish twins to have a film camera in hand, whether they’re working on set or spending quality time with their family. Many of Andres’ photographs were from his memorable journey as part of the series Ang Mutya ng Section E, where he starred in a lead role alongside Ashtine Olviga. Vacation snaps made it to his rolls, too.

Khalil Ramos

Khalil Ramos excels both in front and behind the camera. He’s well-versed in the technicalities of film photography, and it evidently shows through his instincts and decisive moments. May it be street and travel photography or portraiture (with none other than his partner and fellow artist Gabbi Garcia as his muse), Khalil can take them on with artistic ease.

Toni Muñoz of Ben&Ben

Ben&Ben creates emotive music, and they have stunning behind-the-scenes visuals to match thanks to their percussionist Toni Muñoz. Similar to how the group captures universal yet unique feelings and experiences through their songs, Toni does the same through her photographs, from still life and double exposures to various plays on lights and shadows.

Elijah Canlas

Acting in the theater and in movies means being accustomed to, well, things not going your way, whether it’s the need for a sudden deviance from your lines or it’s the weather not cooperating for an outdoor scene, and so on. Elijah Canlas probably knows—and embraces—this. It’s seen in his film photos as well, which embody soft light, charming grains and blurs that only make the memories clearer.

John Manalo

The name John Manalo might be commonly associated with being a child actor, but his love for the arts manifests in a different form now. Currently a director and photographer, his shots make life look just like a movie. Apart from his travels, many of his works include photos of his friends (including his film photography peer Elijah and their fellow artist Miles Ocampo!).
