The upcoming series portrays the glimmering yet brutal era of Hollywood's Golden Age.

Ryan Murphy’s re-writing Hollywood’s Golden Age—and it's already looking like one visually stunning, hopeful, and heartrending rollercoaster. Starring Darren Criss, David Corenswet, Jeremy Pope, Laura Harrier, and Samara Weaving, the limited seven-episode series on Netflix, simply titled Hollywood, is set in post-World War II. Wrought with the signature twists and turns of a Ryan Murphy drama, the story follows a brood of aspiring actors and filmmakers as they try to make a name for themselves in Tinseltown, amid the prejudices stacked against their race, gender, and sexualities.

“We began a lovingly constructed look at how I wished Hollywood would have operated back then; a world where women, gay people, and people of color could flourish,” Ryan explains in a statement. “I think the world would be very different than it is today if that happened.”

Case in point: one notable character is first-time director Raymond Ainsley as portrayed by Darren Criss. Similar to the actor, Raymond is a white-passing half-Filipino who “aspires to broaden the stories Hollywood tells.” The role in particular is one that seems to resonate with Darren who’s highly aware of the privileges that come with his looks despite being half-Asian himself. “[I was] eager to explore what that means for somebody who passes as white in an era where that is a socio-economic advantage,” Darren says. “What does it mean when you’re given opportunities, and what is your responsibility to the people in your life who don’t have access to those opportunities?”

That said, we definitely can’t wait to give this fun yet complex period drama a shot!
