Lanvin's A Girl in Capri has been chosen by the Preview team as the Best Fragrance of 2019. This and 24 other products were reviewed by 25 real girls for this year's Preview Girls' Choice Awards to see if these products truly deserved their title. Ahead, freelance writer Macy Alcaraz gives us her thoughts on the product:
Do a quick review of my fragrances on rotation, and you'll find that there’s one common denominator among them—limonene. It's a chemical found in the peels of citrus fruits such as lemon, lime, grapefruit, and most commonly, orange.
I didn't realize I was drawn to fruity scents until reviewing the ingredient list of some of my favorite fragrances. But aside from these, I’m also particularly drawn to lavender, vanilla, and coconut. Some of my favorite scents to use are RALPH by Ralph Lauren, Repetto, Candy Yum Yum by MAC, Promise Ring by Radioactive Mushrooms in the Forest, and Unang Halik by Simoy ng Haraya. I like going for scents that dry down to a sweet, powdery smell that’s not cloying or irritating.
When it comes to fragrance, I try to go for ones that will last a long time as I very rarely carry around the bottle with me when I’m out and prefer to just spray it once in the morning before I leave the house. Other than that, I’ve never had any allergic reactions to perfumes or colognes so far.
The Product: Lanvin A Girl in Capri
What It Is
A quick sniff of Lanvin’s A Girl in Capri immediately reminded me of a cross between Gap’s Bright and Calvin Klein’s CK One Summer—something very fresh and light and transports you to an island where there’s a perpetual cool summer breeze blowing.
How I Used It
When I first tried it, I knew it was something that would go on rotation in my current roster of fragrances. The lemon scent is what stands out at first but when it dries down and wears on later in the day, you can tell there’s a bit of musk and a hint of ocean in the fragrance. As it’s an eau de toilette, it doesn’t last very long. You may need to refresh by spraying it on again after about six hours or so.
I spritzed it on every day for the past week and I’ve enjoyed sniffing my wrists just to figure out what scent stands out. I usually just spray it on in the morning after my shower—once in my hair, once on my wrists (then I rub them together), and another at the back of my knees. By late afternoon, the scent becomes very faint, but you can still smell it if you sniff closely.
Conclusion
It inspired me to wear a lot of clothes I'd pack on a beach getaway—sandals, breezy tops, and floral dresses. I even started wearing makeup that matched the packaging: eyeliner in citrus colors and coral lips. I suppose if I'm not actually on vacation, the fragrance at least makes me think that I am on one.
As I mentioned, it's something I would reach for typically as most of my go-tos are in the same citrus family of fragrances. It’s a great everyday scent and I think is perfect for our tropical climate, where it feels like summer all day, every day.
