FYI, blush placement can be quite strategic depending on the look and effect you're going for.

Did you know that, in the entire world, only humans are capable of blushing? If this doesn’t tell you just how powerful it is, then we don’t know what will.
Blushing is caused by various emotions—from fear and anger to kilig and embarrassment. It usually happens involuntarily, but thanks to makeup, it’s something we can now relatively control.
The blood rushing to our faces leaves a rosy tint, which has become a coveted look since ancient Egypt. Unlike the olden times, we no longer have to rely on animal fat and crushed berries to emulate the adorable flush. A wide range of shades and formulas is now available, catering to the different skin tones, undertones, and skin types. Beauty has truly come a long way since then, and it’s not too difficult to find a shade that enhances your natural one (or that gives you a unique pop of color if that’s what you’re into).

Appreciating the art of blush means being open to different tools of application, too. An angled brush assists in creating a lifted look regardless of your chosen formula, while a damp beauty blender used for cream or liquid blushes creates an airbrushed look. And of course, the heat of your gentle fingers make for a seamless blend and a natural finish. These three barely scratch the surface of the many ways you can color your own canvas with rouge.

People used to hide the fact that they’re blushing, but today, we turn to cosmetics to help us magnify it. Beauty has always been an effective medium of expression because of how customizable it is; even after identifying your preferences in shades, tools, and whatnot, there is still so much room left to explore. Experimenting with blush placements is one.
Growing up, you’ve probably been told that the proper way to apply blush is by smiling and blending it directly on the apples of your cheeks. This is not to say that that’s not true, but it’s surely not the only way. The technique enhances the roundness of our faces, and sometimes, that’s simply not the look that we’re going for. Exploring various blush placements introduces you to a multitude of ways to achieve any look and vibe that you want.
Ahead, we break down several blush placements, so you can always find one that suits your style.
The Preview Girls' Guide on Blush Placements
Barbie Blush
Take the rise of the clean girl and coquette aesthetics, mesh it with the modernization of nostalgia, and you’ll get Barbie blush. The hyper-feminine look embodies a doll-like perfection with the help of bright pink tones and lit-from-within highlights.

How to Achieve Barbie Blush
Starting off with the basics, apply blush high on the apples of your cheeks.
For a more surreal yet sweet look, it’s optional to blend the blush up towards the temples (or even the eyelids).
Apply the underblush method by putting on concealer under your eyes. Don’t worry about going over your blush—that’s exactly what will help you create a doll-like glow.
Further brighten up your face’s center by baking with white powder.
Create a seamless gradient by going in with a pale pink blush. Lightly apply it over the high points of your face to better blend the blush, concealer, and powder together.
Top it off with your preferred highlight that will channel your inner Barbie girl’s plastic-like beam.
Douyin Blush
Also characterized by a look reminiscent of dolls is the Douyin blush, popularized from Chinese beauty. It emulates a soft and ethereal radiance which features dewy skin, shimmery doe eyes, blurred and pouty lips, and of course, a whimsical yet striking blush that’s strategically applied.

How to Achieve Douyin Blush
Cream or liquid blushes work best for Douyin blush. Begin by choosing one that easily blends into the skin for that natural look. Red lipstick is a common choice for this placement, too!
Draw small arrowheads or hearts on the outer corners of your eyes, your cheekbones, your chin, and the tip of your nose.
With your blending tool of choice, blend the pigment outwards to create a diffused effect.
Freely repeat the steps to intensify the soft yet sculpted look.
Sunkissed Blush
If you miss the way you’d look after spending hours under the sun, then sunkissed blush is the one for you. It enhances the areas where we’d naturally be prone to sunburn—minus the pain and hassle! It sweeps across the cheeks and over the bridge of the nose, which are also the areas our face redden after having a little too much alcohol, making sunkissed blush and drunk blush quite similar to each other.

How to Achieve Sunkissed Blush
Visualize the areas where the sun normally hits your face. These usually include the cheeks, the bridge of the nose, the temples, the chin, and the forehead.
Apply blush on the said areas. Feel free to go more heavily on the center of your face and lightly around the perimeter to keep the look more accurate.
Another option is to use blush with a reflective finish on the high points of your face, and a darker shade on the other areas. This can help with creating dimension naturally.
Boyfriend Blush
What’s a more royal flush than a blush placement inspired by Prince William and Prince Harry? The boyfriend blush originated from a ‘90s makeup technique that mimicked the royals’ bright and rosy rouge, or in general, the flustered look men get after doing physical activities under the heat of the sun. It adds color to the face while creating a subtle sculpt.

How to Achieve Boyfriend Blush
Boyfriend blush goes below your cheekbones, where contour is usually done. To identify proper placement, a pro tip is to take your index and your middle fingers together and place them at the corner of your lips—that’s where your blush should end.
Dab blush on the said area, in a subtle downward V shape.
An optional step is to go slightly above the depth of your cheekbones, adorning the apples of the cheeks with a brighter shade of blush to bring out more dimension. By dabbing and not sweeping, you can achieve a diffused ombre look.
Don’t forget to blend the edges to avoid harsh lines.
Lifted Blush
Your blush placement can slightly alter the dimensions of your face, which means it’s also capable of giving you a snatched look. This diagonal placement enhances your cheekbones and adds definition. When done right, it’s like an instant facelift!

How to Achieve Lifted Blush
Apply blush on the highest part of your cheeks, angling the color diagonally.
Starting from the bottom, blend it upwards and outwards towards your temples to create the illusion of a tighter and more lifted face.
