Not all dress shirts are made the same.

While most feature a row of buttons running down the front, subtle design details set them apart. Some styles vary in sleeve length, others include chest pockets—but the most common point of confusion comes down to terminology.

What exactly distinguishes a button-up from a button-down? The terms are often used interchangeably, yet they refer to two very distinct shirt styles.

Button-Up vs. Button-Down

The distinction comes down to one small feature.

A button-down shirt is designed with buttons that secure the collar points directly to the body of the shirt, giving it a more relaxed feel. A standard button-up, on the other hand, has a clean collar without buttons.

In menswear, button-up shirts are generally considered dressier and more adaptable for formal situations, as they're ideal for securing a tie in place.

Button-downs, meanwhile, are more casual by design. The style traces its roots to sports like polo, where collar buttons were introduced to prevent fabric from flapping during movement.

Put simply: all button-downs are button-ups—since they button up the front—but not every button-up qualifies as a button-down.

Button-up shirts are closely linked to formal dressing. They’re a go-to for looks that require polish, clarity, or structure, spanning professional environments to smart-casual occasions.

According to most menswear enthusiasts, a button-up without collar buttons remains the preferred option for wearing with a tie.

That said, a tie can still work with a button-down. The result is a more casual, American Ivy-inspired look rather than something strictly formal. Because the collar buttons introduce a sporty element, this combination is better suited to business-casual or smart-casual settings—ideally styled with a sport coat, a smaller knot like the Four-in-Hand, and matte or textured ties instead of high-shine silk for a cohesive finish.
