Philipp Tampus' dresses were made with gradient hues and impeccable workmanship.

Philipp Tampus brings back classic evening silhouettes with masterful technique matched with a rich color palette. The Cebu-based designer presented a beautiful selection of haute formal wear for his Panasonic Manila Fashion Festival collection, and amongst his designs was a definite standout: this Maria Clara-esque look of opulent lace in black and deep purple. It’s an edited rendition of the classic design that’s meant for the modern Filipina—a slimmer look that’s cut at the bias, its long sleeves were traded in for bare arms, and its hem floats just above the ankle.

The look was just the tip of this collection’s iceberg. One by one, the looks that walked the runway were quite familiar, but the designer’s distinct reinterpretation took them to a different plane. Long gowns found new life, with their bodices made in interlacing pleats; some had lace detailing, and there were those with trains draping from the hips. Evening dresses armored with intricate embroidery and lined with gradient blues, oranges, and teal were a breath of fresh air with details that made them stand out: leg of mutton sleeves, ruffles in soft lace, even skirts made from thin strips of fabric, manipulated to create a fine ombré ripple.

Overall, the whole collection was a display of the designer’s flair for storied pieces, punches of color, and creative construction. See the rest of the looks below!
