We first met Chris Nick back in June 2019. His maiden collection floored us as he was able to capture Parisian elegance in contemporary pieces you’ll surely tag as closet mainstays. Now, Chris is back with yet another jet black collection, inspired by the city of love. The only difference is his new looks are rich with history.
Inspired by the roaring 20s, Chris Nick’s new collection uses edgy and glamorous black and white pieces to associate the change of the past century to the fashion of today. Chris says that his Fall 2020 collection dives into the cultural boom of the 1920s, taking context from the pandemic and wars during that time. Much like today, the 1920s was a decade of change. Art and culture were in full swing, with so many aspects of the society craving something buoyant and heartening post-pandemic.
A century later, this sentiment rings ever so true. Not only are we facing another pandemic, but we are also highlighting many changes around the world. Although fashion has been greatly affected by the pandemic, it is still something we hold dear in our hearts. We still need fashion not only to have something to wear, but also to express ourselves. Fashion in itself is a form of language. As Chris emphasizes, "Fashion does not necessarily have to stop. We must look forward."
Hence, Chris’ new collection features a study of non-color, texture, tailoring, and tasteful skin showcase. According to him, black is a symbol of power, fantasy, seduction, and mystery. Expect the designer’s experimentation on fringes and feathers, which he balances out with clean silhouettes. Masterful tailoring, one of his strengths as a designer, shines through as Chris dabbles into modern Filipina ‘fits merged with sharp suiting.
All in all, Chris’ new collection modernizes the iconic 1920s fashion while giving us the message we all need during these trying times: Find light through the darkness, and move forward—clad in one glamorous ‘fit at a time.
