We catch up with the stylist and It girl, fresh from her L.A. sabbatical.

Los Angeles is a recurring setting in Liz Uy’s work and life that industry insiders and Liz’s legion of followers know to have started two years ago. At that time, the stylist and then emerging international style star was on the verge of something big, having established her presence in the world’s most important fashion weeks and growing the celebrity and corporate clientele of StyLIZed Studio. It was only fitting that that she fronted the magazine—her fourth time—and appropriately, right smack in L.A., against the famed Hollywood sign.

For all its dreamy La La Land possibilities, however, L.A. has become a deeper place for Liz, especially for a good part of 2017. L.A. has become her sanctuary and second home, and not just the set of a shoot or a city to cross out from a travel bucket list.

“It was a choice between two cities: L.A. or New York. But New York is too fast na,” admits the perennially booked and busy stylist, hinting at a change of pace. “I guess I would have picked New York in my younger years but I now want a laidback lifestyle. L.A. offers that: more brunching with friends, more greenery, lush, slow living.” Her IG feed—the thirty or so most recent photos, at least—show us exactly that.

Living in the US with a working visa care of The Society Management had a lot to do with her temporary leave from the daily grind in Manila. While the grander objective was to rest and relax, she used her time in L.A. to network and still accept styling jobs. Among them, Anne Curtis’ look on her wedding day and Pia Wurtzbach’s return to the Miss Universe red carpet. And thanks to Whatsapp, she has her Manila duties for StyLIZed Studio and its celebrity and corporate clients all sorted out.

Coming home to Manila right before Christmas, Liz looks fresh and raring to take on the new year and the places it will take her. (L.A. will continue to be a constant aside from the world’s fashion capitals.) Lucky for us, her first fashion feature for 2018 is here in Manila, and with us where she first spread her fashion wings. In between photos, makeup and a lot of catch-up chatter, Liz spoke to us about her new bicoastal life, the Pinoy banquet she’s learned to cook on her own as a result of living away from Manila and the steady stream of work that lies ahead.

In an industry where visibility drives relevance, being away for so long can be risky for one’s career. How did you feel about being away from the daily grind for so long?

"It felt liberating to not worry so much about the daily hustle and bustle. I needed a vacation anyway, so L.A. was more leisure than work. Sure, I got to meet the fashion industry insiders and interesting people here and there, but I kept reminding myself that L.A. was mostly about me time. I used that time to focus more on myself and to spend time with my family and friends. That time off was much needed, to say the least."

Did L.A. feel like home? Did you feel like a local or a traveler on an extended stay?

"A traveler at first and eventually, like a local. I love L.A. so much that I want to live there if I could. But then again, real life is here [in Manila]. Fortunately, L.A. will always be there and I can always go when I miss it."

We’re curious: Were there any celebrities you saw in person? Where exactly?

"Kendall Jenner at Alfred’s Tea Room in Melrose. It’s nice to see her casual, not on the runway. I asked what tea she ordered, they didn’t tell me.

"I was also beside Gordon Ramsey one time at Catch L.A., also in WeHo.

"And then for Anne (Curtis)'s wedding, I got to meet Monique Lhuillier at her studio and saw how she was during fittings. It was truly special and I felt lucky to have seen it."

Speaking of fittings, you would still get credited for styling work in Manila while you were away. How did you run StyLIZed Studio the whole time?

"I have an efficient team that updates me via Whatsapp every single day. And when the client wants to be involved, we create a group chat with her, so all of us are looped in."

Anything in general you missed about home?

"The food. So, I learned how to cook via YouTube and applied what I learned from the Center of Asian Culinary Studies (CACS). Yes, I took classes at CACS here in Manila, but my schedule was so crazy that I just popped in whenever I could. Fortunately, Chef Gene Gonzalez let me. I always check Erwan (Heussaff)'s food vlogs, too.

"I also missed my bed!"

What sort of Pinoy staples can you now cook by yourself?

"I can now serve you kare-kare, bistek Tagalog, adobo, sinigang and tinola. It’s easy lang pala! [laughs]"

What are you working on while you're here in Manila?

"Goal-setting with my company, StyLIZed Studio, for 2018."

Are you staying here or are you packing your suitcases again?

"I am staying put for now but Spring/Summer Fashion Week is coming up and I will be attending the shows starting with the New York presentations. I am looking forward to seeing the collections but also dreading the cold!"
