Red carpets are often associated with luxurious gowns and lavish jewelry, but even among the most distinguished guests, less expensive ensembles have thrived in the spotlight. Take for example Catherine, Princess of Wales (a.k.a. Kate Middleton), whose recent red carpet look included an upcycled dress and retail earrings worth P1,000.

The British princess arrived on the red carpet of the 76th British Film Academy Awards (BAFTAs) alongside her husband Prince William, the Academy’s president since 2010. The royal couple was among the eagerly awaited guests of the night, as this was their first appearance at the annual awards show after three years.
All eyes, as expected, were on the newly-minted Wales royals, who both opted for a black-and-white motif as a tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II. While Prince William went for the quintessential spiffy look with a velvet tuxedo, the royal heir’s wife was all classic in more ways than one.
For her 2023 BAFTAs look, the 41-year-old princess was swathed in a white floor-length number from Alexander McQueen, which was last spotted on Catherine during the Academy’s 2019 ceremony. However, some changes were made since its previous appearance, with the dress’ floral shoulder details swapped for a draped fabric that fell like waves.
And while her accessories gave an air of elegance, they, too, are more accessible than the usual royal getup. The princess paired the flowing gown with a pair of black opera gloves and floral cascading earrings, courtesy of retail brand Zara. The earrings are priced at P1,295 in Philippine Zara stores, although the exact piece is currently sold out.

This isn’t the first time that the formerly dubbed Kate Middleton flaunted her proud “outfit repeater” status. In 2020, the princess also made a case for sustainability during her appearance at the award ceremony with another Alexander McQueen creation. Fashion with a cause? Yup, we’re all for it!
