For our new column, Dear Mr. Know-It-All, our resident menswear blogger Gian Reyes tells you everything you need to know to be the kind of man we like. He knows all.
Dear Mr. Know-it-all, Do you have to be good looking to be fashionable?
This is a common misconception as I know when we see magazines with beautiful models it seems like these gods and goddesses are the only ones suited to wear such amazing clothes. Children, this is called marketing and of course brands would want to be represented by people we like looking at. However, I don’t think that’s what being fashionable is all about (although it does help). Fashion is an art form, it’s self-expression. It’s about you communicating a message of who you are and what you want to present the world. Take it from your slightly below average looking columnist. ;)
Dear Mr. Know-it-all, what’s the best gift to buy a girlfriend for our anniversary?
We’ve all heard the song, diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but unless you’re rolling in it like Jay Gatsby, this probably isn’t always a viable option. Guess what guys, women appreciate things that you’ve put thought into. To be honest, this is more of a test on how much you know her. What would sweep her off her feet? It could be as simple as a jar full of daily reminders of things that you love about her for your girl who’s been feeling a little unsure of herself lately. Perhaps a much needed holiday away for your overworked partner. As they say, it’s the thought that counts. If you have no idea, you better start saving your money, because if you haven’t been paying her enough attention, you might just need to shell out for those diamonds.
Dear Mr. Know-it-all, what colour socks do I wear?
This is an age old question that has plagued men ever since socks were invented (probably). The safe rule is, match your socks with your trousers. For myself, I only have one rule – never wear white socks with trousers/suit pants. I tend to go a bit wild with my sock choices from navy with polka dots to purple socks with foxes, it’s a great way to add a bit of interest and show off some personality. However, even I wouldn’t dare wear my moustache print socks for a serious job interview or meeting with a CEO. You’re an adult, I’m sure you can exercise this with caution.
