Yesterday, beverage giant Starbucks made a huge announcement: They will be removing plastic straws from their stores globally by the year 2020. According to them, the initiative will save them from using a billion straws per year.
In effect, drinks will soon be served with strawless lids—like a grown-up sippy-cup, if you will! While the lid is also made of plastic, it can be properly recycled. Chris Milne, director of packaging sourcing for Starbucks, explains, "By nature, the straw isn’t recyclable and the lid is, so we feel this decision is more sustainable and more socially responsible."
Starbucks Philippines tells Preview that the strawless lid is currently only available in the U.S. and Canada, but it will be slowly rolled out globally. For now, customers have the option to skip plastic straws completely to reduce their plastic usage. Reusable cold cups are also available for purchase in-store, and customers can choose to bring their own tumblers, too, which will even earn them a five-peso discount!
That said, Starbucks notes that they will still give you a straw at the rare chance that you need one. Don't worry, because the brand says that their current plastic straws are compostable.
Since it might take a while before your neighborhood Starbucks rolls out their reusable straws in the store, how about purchasing one ASAP to support Mother Nature and the brand's initiative to quit plastic straws altogether?
