Last December, South Korean actress and Record of Youth star Park So Dam revealed that she’d been diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer and had just finished surgery to treat the illness, leaving her fans in a state of shock.
The 30-year-old star, who rose to fame thanks to her role as the daughter of the Kim family in the award-winning film Parasite, also had to stop working in the middle of promotional activities for her recent project, Special Delivery, in order to recuperate from the operation.
In spite of her situation, So Dam still took the time to reassure her fans. In January 4, she posted a letter that stated her best wishes for her social media followers this 2022. “Please stay healthy physically and mentally, as I hope the days when we can interact face-to-face will arrive soon. I miss all of you very much. Thank you. Happy new year,” the actress wrote.
According to the Columbia Thyroid Center, papillary thyroid cancer is the most common of its kind. Moreover, it's also one of the most common cancer among women. Luckily, it “can be cured if treated appropriately and early enough.”
In a recent interview for So Dam’s film Special Delivery, the actress mentioned that she’s indeed "recovering well" after her surgery last December.
Following this, she also shared that she aims to be as healthy as possible both mentally and physically moving forward. “I want to do the work I love for a long long time, and I want to experience a lot of things,” she said. “There’s so much I haven’t done yet. I want to live long, healthily, and happily. I want to look back on what I haven’t done until now and the people I couldn’t take care of, and I want to experience everything after recovering well.”
So Dam leads Special Delivery along with Jung Hyun Joon, the child actor who played her student in Parasite. The crime-action film follows a successful delivery driver whose job and life are put at risk after a child boards her car.
It premiered on January 12 and topped the Korean box office on the day of its release.
