Next up on our list of budget-friendly room transformations: Mike Miguel's fresh space. This one proves that a minimalist design doesn't have to be colorless, sterile, and empty-looking. As long as you eradicate clutter and keep only the important things, you can achieve that art-infused, minimalist room you've only ever seen on Pinterest, and now on Mike's feed.
Mike's a creative manager for a PR agency, and has an eye for thoughtful home decor. His previous home makeovers featured a Pottery Barn-esque wood-and-plants aesthetic, but, recently, he's become fond of color. According to the 25-year-old, this particular space used to be bare, containing only a bed. The finished product:
ICYMI, white walls are vogue now, and for good reason. They instantly give an illusion of spaciousness, cleanliness, and modernity. With them in the background, Mike's color-coordinated accent pieces and expressive decor just pop! Also, that freestanding garment rack reminds us of our fave vintage shops. Okay, noted: Exposed closets are très chic.

It's been said that your surroundings really affect your headspace, and we think that's true! Is there a particular mood or mindset you were pining after when you were designing the space?
"My home aesthetic is originally more into neutrals and [is] a bit dark and moody. But when the ECQ took place and the cabin fever started to hit, I instantly felt I needed something new, a brighter and vibrant space to lift up my mood, and luckily the empty whitewashed room I got stuck in was the perfect canvas!"
What were some key practical steps you took to transform your bare room into this fresh, colorful space?
"Initially, I didn't intend to transform the whole space. It just started as me ordering mini trinkets to spruce up my WFH setup, but there were just a lot of cute and cheap decors popping here and there, and more purchases took place. Next thing I know, I have rug deliveries arriving in the middle of my Zoom meetings. There really wasn't a theme or anyhing, though I did try to look for pieces that were cohesive and that would complement each other, and, most importantly, were affordable. "
Would you mind sharing your total budget for your room makeover, as well as how you managed to stick to it? Especially now with home decor Facebook groups and online shopping, it's just so easy to pour out funds!
"To be honest, I didn't really think about budget then. I just assumed everything I got and ordered were affordable because they were from Shopee, which is true naman. I think I didn't spend on anything more than P2000, which was sort of my limit when adding things to my cart. I think all in all I just spent around P15,000. I guess the key here as well was to look for things that would go with the things you already have to lessen buying other new stuff. Haha!"
