Who doesn’t love the sweet taste of biko? A staple kakanin for every Filipino household, it’s a true Pinoy snack that will never let you down. And ordering it from a store wittily named Mayor Biko? Even better!
As the name suggests, this online store sells the beloved Filipino rice cake in bilao sizes. While there are a myriad of kakanin shops scattered all over the country and online, Mayor Biko particularly stands out for the thick rich layer of candy-like latik topping their classic biko.
Of course, there’s also their puntastic name! Contrary to what you might think though, Mayor Biko wasn’t named after Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto. Him winning the mayoral seat in 2019 simply served as a happy accident for the store, which, as a result, garnered public traction thanks to this unforeseen coincidence. But in case you were wondering, yes, Mayor Vico himself has indeed already had a taste of their mouthwatering biko, too!
“Nagkataon pong sumakto ang aming pangalan kay Ginoong Mayor Vico, Nung nanalo na po si Mayor tsaka lang po kami pinagkakaguluhan dahil nga po kapangalan ni Mayor,” recalled the owners of Mayor Biko. “Huling dalawang linggo ay kami’y bumisita sa kanyang opisina at nagdala ng Biko para sa kanya at kanyang staff.”
The shop’s biko comes in two sizes: There’s an 11-inch serving fit for two to three people for the price of P450. There’s also their 16-inch serving, which can feed up to eight people for P650.
