What We Know So Far About the Japanese Remake of "Itaewon Class"

The popular 2020 K-drama Itaewon Class is officially getting a Japanese remake!

As per Korean media, the show’s original studio, JTBC, will be working with Kakao Entertainment and its subsidiary Kross Pictures, along with TV Asahi to produce the adaptation. 

FYI, Itaewon Class starred hallyu heartthrob Park Seo Joon as Park Saeroyi, a righteous high school student who ends up in jail after he avenges the death of his father. When he’s released years later, he vows to put up the best pub in Itaewon to best Jangga Co. and its CEO, Jang Da-hee, the man responsible for ruining his life.

The Korean series was met with critical acclaim during its release. It also gained popularity internationally as the episodes were simultaneously streamed on global platform Netflix. As of writing, it’s the ninth highest-rating K-drama on cable TV.

Titled Roponggi Class, after Japan’s major entertainment district, the Japanese version is set to have 13 episodes that will drop this summer of 2022.

While the cast list hasn't been confirmed yet, rumored contenders for the major roles have been circulating around social media as early as last year.

Well known Japanese magazine Weekly Women revealed lat September 2021 that actor Takeuchi Ryoma was in talks to top bill the drama as the localized iteration of Saeroyi. Ryoma is currently 28 years old and is best known for his lead role in the live action adaptation of the manga Kamen Rider.

Meanwhile, singer and actress Hirate Yurina was reportedly offered the part of Jo Yi-seo, Saeroyi’s love interest who was originally played by Kim Da Mi.
