You have to admit, her meteoric rise in followers doesn't seem organic at all.

If you’re like us who always look forward to fashionable shows like Sex and the City and Gossip Girl, then we assume you also binge-watched all 10 episodes of Emily in Paris in one sitting. Starring Lily Collins, the Netflix series created by Darren Star tells the story of a bright-eyed 20-something girl named Emily Cooper, who flew from Chicago to Paris to give a Parisian marketing firm a fresh American perspective.

Well, the reviews are in, and while the fashion is obviously fantastic (let’s get that right), there’s apparently a mix of people who love and loathe it. What’s clear though is that the internet can’t seem to stop talking about it for many reasons: her designer wardrobe, her signature phone case, her hot neighbor, and—yup, you guessed it!—her unbelievably quick rise to influencer status.

Right off the bat, on her first day at her new office, Emily schools her Parisian workmates on the importance of using the correct social media strategy in building a brand (in English, mind you, because she apparently doesn’t know how to speak French). Her boldness aside, this immediately paints our protagonist as a marketing maven who’s an expert in all things social media, which the internet is specifically baffled about.

First of all, she starts off with literally only 40-plus followers—but for the sake of the argument, let’s just assume that this supposedly social media guru deleted her old account and made a new one to celebrate her new life in Paris. She then snaps a few selfies of herself as well as random corners of the city, instinctively posts them on Instagram without even geotagging or bothering to think of a strategic caption and hashtag, and magically wakes up the next morning with a slew of new followers by the thousands. To suggest that her social media clout’s meteoric rise is “organic” would be like rubbing salt into the wound of every hardworking aspiring influencer out there.

So could this even be possible? Nope, the internet certainly doesn’t think so! “After watching one episode of Emily in Paris, I can honestly say the most offensive thing about it is the suggestion that you can get 200 new social media followers by posting a photo of yourself eating a chocolate croissant,” notes one Twitter user.

Another tweet also observed how she “uses nothing but random/obscure hashtags on her social posts.” Meanwhile, others can’t seem to get over the fact that she landed a huge social media job that brought her to Paris with only less than 50 followers of her own. Here's what the internet is saying about it:

So yeah, in a nutshell, Emily in Paris is a pretty entertaining and hands down fashionable show—just as long as you don’t expect to learn actual tips on how to become an influencer overnight! LOL!
