It will be the show's fifth and final season!

Royal watchers will have mixed feelings about Imelda Staunton taking the throne from predecessors Olivia Colman and Claire Foy in the fifth season of Netflix’s The Crown as it will also be the show’s last. The English actress, who’s widely known to Harry Potter fans as the actress behind the uptight Dolores Umbridge, will play the final Queen Elizabeth, as the series tends to change cast members every two seasons for the actors to factually match their real-life counterparts.

Following the timeline, season five will most likely take place in the ‘90s and possibly tackle Princess Diana’s death.

“I have loved watching The Crown from the very start,” she said in a statement. “As an actor it was a joy to see how both Claire Foy and Olivia Colman brought something special and unique to Peter Morgan’s scripts. I am genuinely honoured to be joining such an exceptional creative team and to be taking The Crown to its conclusion.”

You might also recognize Imelda from films such as Downton Abbey or Paddington, where she portrays Lady Maud Bagshaw and Aunt Lucy, respectively. She’s also appeared in leading roles in theater productions, for which she’s won awards for Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, and The Wizard of Oz.

We’re sad to see the show come to an end but also excited to see how The Crown’s new cast will do their predecessors justice.
