Phil Rosenthal, the cheerful creator of Everybody Loves Raymond, has become somewhat of a cultural ambassador with his Netflix series, which blends good food, local history, and heartfelt conversations. In each episode, he breaks bread with chefs, locals, and friends—often spotlighting the stories behind the dishes and the people making them. The Manila episode is no exception.
From hole-in-the-wall carinderias to globally recognized restaurants, here are all the food spots featured in Somebody Feed Phil’s Manila episode.
LIST:
"Somebody Feed Phil" Restaurants in Manila and the Philippines
1. Trellis
First stop: Trellis in Quezon City. Phil meets up with content creator and food advocate Erwan Heussaff, who introduces him to the sizzling magic of pork sisig, a Filipino pulutan staple. They’re served by none other than Claude Tayag himself, who shares a spread that includes pitichan (Pampanga’s crispy chicharon variation) paired with atchara, and a comforting plate of fried tilapia with burong hipon—fermented shrimp rice wrapped in mustard leaves.

2. Toyo Eatery
In Makati’s art-forward Karrivin Plaza, Phil sits down at the acclaimed Toyo Eatery with co-owner May Navarra and former sous chef JP Cruz. A consistent name on best restaurants lists, Toyo showcases Philippine ingredients through progressive techniques.

The meal kicks off with a trio of kinilaw, each version uniquely tangy thanks to the native tabon-tabon fruit. A salad inspired by all 18 vegetables in the folk song Bahay Kubo follows, then fried bisugo, silog garlic rice, and grilled chicken steeped in garlic and chives. It’s a sensory journey that reflects the eatery’s philosophy of rediscovery through flavor.

3. Sosing’s Carinderia
No trip to the Philippines is complete without a visit to a carinderia. At Aling Sosing’s in Makati, Phil hops off a jeepney and dives into local fare in its purest form. The house favorite? A perfectly charred liempo, served with beef kaldereta and crispy shrimp fritters. It’s an ode to no-frills, big-flavor cooking, beloved since 1971.

4. Jollibee
A bucket of Chickenjoy comes with a side of nostalgia. Phil pays tribute to his family caretaker, Isabelita, who once introduced his family to the Filipino fast-food chain. As he munches on a drumstick, he murmurs, “This one’s for you, Dad.”

A visit to the Philippines wouldn't be done without Jollibee’s signature crispy chicken, sweet spaghetti, and peach mango pie.

5. Asador Alfonso
South of Manila, in breezy Tagaytay, Phil visits Asador Alfonso, a Spanish-Filipino fine dining destination by Chele Gonzalez and Rodrigo Osorio. The setting—designed by architect Carlo Calma—is as striking as the food.

A modern gazpacho, sourdough with anchovy butter, tapas with jamón de Wagyu, and Lake Taal fish grace the table. The centerpiece: squid ink paella followed by their signature lechazo, a slow-roasted lamb cooked in a brick oven imported from Spain. Dessert? A velvety cheesecake.

7. Grace Park Dining
The episode ends on a heartfelt note at Grace Park, where the late, great Margarita Forés brings together Phil’s food companions for a final feast. On the table: lechon marinated with beer, gabi leaves simmered in coconut milk, conch sisig, scallops with roe, kinilaw, prawns, lamb adobo, and pitaw.

A champion of farm-to-table dining, the chef fondly known as Gaita merged Italian techniques with Filipino flavors to create comforting yet elevated dishes. Her legacy lives on in this Rockwell favorite.
