PSA: There’s a new romance drama poised to make our hearts flutter, and we can hardly wait! If you loved Lee Do Hyun on 18 Again, then prepare to fall for his handsome charms all over again for KBS2’s Youth of May. But hey, if Love Alarm was more your cup of tea, you might also recognize his leading lady, Go Min Si, who starred in the Netflix original series as Kim Jojo’s overbearing cousin.

Fun fact: This isn’t Do Hyun and Min Si’s first time working together. Yup, they  actually first played siblings in Netflix’s horror drama, Sweet Home. All things considered, we’re definitely intrigued to see how their romantic chemistry will play out this time around.

But before anything else, here’s a list of everything you need to know about Youth of May.

1. It’s based on a true event.

There’s more to this drama than just romance. Let’s start with some backstory. Set in the 1980s, Youth of May was inspired by a historically significant event that transpired in Korea during that time, remembered as the Gwangju Uprising. Having lasted for at least 10 days, more than a quarter of a million people engaged in the rebellion staged to protest against the brutal military regime ruling South Korea at the time. Though it was initially unsuccessful and even resulted to the death of thousands, the nationwide demonstration was a major catalyst for eventually gaining democracy in the country.

2. It’s got a cast of lovable rising stars.

As you can probably already guess, the drama itself will follow four young individuals who’ll find themselves caught in the uprising’s crossfire. Do Hyun is set to play Hwang Hee Tae, a mischievous yet determined medical student “who strives to discredit all the stereotypes held against him.” Meanwhile, Min Si will play a third-year nurse named Kim Myung Hee. Having moved to the city of Gwangju all by herself to pursue her dreams, she’s a valiant fighter who can weather through any obstacles thrown her way.

Rounding out the main cast are fellow rising TV names, Lee Sang Yi (When the Camellia Blooms, Once Aagain) and Geum Sae Rok (The Fiery Priest, Joseon Exorcist). The two will play siblings in the series with Sae Rok as Lee Soo Ryun, an easygoing law student and Myung Hee’s best friend. Sang Yi will portray her older brother, Lee So Chan, who begins working for the family business after finishing his studies in France.

3. It will be helmed by the director of “School 2017.”

Sitting in the director’s chair is Director Song Min Yeop who last helmed the mystery thriller, Doctor Prisoner. That said, he’s not new to youth dramas either as he also previously co-directed School 2017, which starred The Uncanny Counter star, Kim Sejeong. Penning the script, on the other hand, is screenwriter Lee Kang who’s best known for his work on the 2015 political romance thriller, Spy.

4. "Youth of May" is set to air on KBS2 this May 3, 2021.

No word yet on whether the drama will be available on streaming platforms like Netflix or Viu, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed for good news soon.
