Netflix recently dropped the latter half of Wednesday Season 2 where we met half-Filipino werewolf Bruno, played by Fil-Am actor Noah Taylor. In the show’s newest episodes, Bruno’s Pinoy link didn’t just stop at his heritage. By playing up his roots, the show acknowledged its Filipino viewers in a more direct manner, but whether it landed the way they intended is, well, up for discussion to say the least.
On episode six titled “Woe Thyself,” Wednesday and her BFF Enid unwittingly switch bodies after a ritual gone wrong. While in Enid’s body, Wednesday chances upon the former’s boyfriend making a sneaky phone call in Tagalog. “Miss na kita. Miss ko na yung pagpasyal natin sa beach. Miss ko na lalo yung matamis na mga labi mo. Baba ko na ’to, mahal ko,” Bruno tells his secret affair.

After hearing of his deceit, Wednesday, here played by Emma Myers, breaks up with him in a language he can understand. “Huwag mo na kong kausapin, manlolokong taksil,” she says, later on explaining that she learned to speak Tagalog from her Filipino fencing tutor named Datu.
Internet Reactions to the Tagalog Dialogue on “Wednesday”
The scene elicited mixed reactions from Filipino viewers. Some expressed their genuine surprise while others found the attempt amusing. “The tagalog crumbs on episode 6 is so corny yet funny enid speaking it wasn't on anyone's bingo card,” wrote one user. “Never in my life have I imagined Wednesday dancing to Boombayah and Enid speaking Tagalog,” another X user said.

Others, however, panned the script and delivery of the lines, calling them unnatural or even suspecting that they were Google translated. Prior to the scene itself, we also see Bruno get a text from his “mom” in rather stilted Tagalog, which reads, “Puwede ba kitang tawagan? Libre ka ba ngayon?”

Despite the criticism the series is facing, Emma Myers drew praise from fans for her Tagalog pronunciation as compared to Noah’s. One X user observed, “Did they google translate the tagalog lines on wednesday also how is emma speaking it better?”
In an interview, Emma revealed that she only found out about the body-switch episode a month before filming after the crew kept bringing it up with her. While she had less time than Jenna to prepare, the actress has also been receiving a lot of love for her dark and brooding portrayal of Wednesday in Enid's body.

Are we loving the Pinoy crumbs from Netflix or was it just plain awkward? What’s your take on the Filipino dialogue that we got on Wednesday?
