Netflix and Sony Animation’s KPop Demon Hunters has turned out to be one of the year’s biggest cultural crossovers, fusing K-pop energy, Korean folklore, and slick animation into a global phenomenon. The movie’s blend of pop-star dazzle and mythic demon-slaying made it an instant hit with fans worldwide—but according to Deadline and Variety, that success won’t extend to the BAFTAs. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has ruled the film ineligible for this year’s awards, despite Netflix’s formal appeal.

KPop Demon Hunters Deemed Ineligible for the BAFTAs

While the movie meets Oscar qualifications, KPop Demon Hunters failed to satisfy BAFTA’s stricter theatrical release requirements. In the U.S., the animated movie enjoyed a qualifying run in theaters before landing on Netflix. In the U.K., however, the film debuted on the streamer on June 20 before returning to cinemas much later—on August 23 and 24 in 264 theaters, followed by additional screenings in 528 cinemas over Halloween weekend.

Netflix reportedly sought an exemption under BAFTA’s “exceptional circumstances” clause, which allows entries distributed through alternative models such as event cinema. But BAFTA’s Film Committee denied the request, noting that the film did not meet the rule requiring at least 10 commercial screenings in the U.K. over a minimum of seven days.

Had the release been simultaneous in theaters and online, as Deadline reports, KPop Demon Hunters would have qualified.

Despite the awards setback, KPop Demon Hunters continues to be a global juggernaut. The film became Netflix’s most-watched movie of all time, amassing more than 541 million hours viewed worldwide. Its soundtrack—featuring hits like “Golden,” “Your Idol,” and “Soda Pop”—has gone platinum, with “Golden” picking up three Grammy nominations, including Song of the Year.

What Is Kpop Demon Hunters About?

Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the film follows Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo)—members of Huntr/x, a powerhouse K-pop girl group who double as demon slayers. Their toughest challenge comes when their demonic nemesis (voiced by Lee Byung Hun) launches a rival boy band led by Jinu (voiced by Business Proposal star Ahn Hyo Seop)—a charismatic frontman whose charm conceals a darker purpose: stealing the souls of their fans.

A hyper-stylized blend of pop glamour, action, and heartfelt friendship, the film struck a chord with fans worldwide, spawning viral dance challenges, chart-topping singles, and an endless stream of fan art and cosplay.

With KPop Demon Hunters 2 already in the works for a 2029 release, Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation seem ready to extend the magic—perhaps with a more awards-friendly rollout next time!
