We’re definitely still reeling from this month’s Preview cover with our October muse Ivana Alawi. If you’re dying to know more about the magic behind the actress’ whimsical labada photos, then you’re in luck because celebrity photographer BJ Pascual has got it covered!
According to BJ’s recent behind-the-scenes vlog on his YouTube channel, his inspiration for the shoot came from Fernando Amorsolo’s paintings of Filipina women washing clothes, as an ode to that viral video on... You know the one. “Ayokong masyadong literal yung interpretation nung Amorsolo paintings… I like combining different references to create something hopefully new and fresh. I also wanted it to be a bit darker and moodier than the Amorsolo reference,” the photographer explains.
As for that fantastical forest backdrop requested by Ivana herself? Well, BJ and production designer Princess Barretto revaled that the studio setup actually paid homage to a ‘90s pop music video. And yes, they built the whole thing indoors, from the ground up. If the visuals don’t ring a bell, you may want to look up the MV for a song called I Wanna Love You by a little known ‘90s pop girl group named Solid Harmonie. “May part kasi sa video na nag-zoom out yung camera tapos ni-reveal na set lang pala lahat nung settings nila dun. Yun yung una kong naisip when thinking about a forest set-up,” said BJ.
