Alex Eala made history once again, this time on the hard courts of Guadalajara, Mexico. Fresh from becoming the first Filipina to win a main-draw match at the US Open, the young tennis star grabbed a last-minute wild card at the Guadalajara 125 Open and turned it into a career milestone.

Beyond the thrill of victory and the impressive comeback matches that defined her run, there was another notable win: the prize money that came with lifting her first WTA 125 trophy.

Alex’s road to the title was marked by resilience and clutch performances. She survived a grueling second-round match against American qualifier Varvara Lepchenko that stretched over two days, then came back from deficits in the quarterfinals against Italy’s Nicole Fossa Huergo. In the final, Alex faced Hungary’s Panna Udvardy, who had beaten her in a previous tournament earlier this year, and rallied from a first-set loss to win 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.

The victory also gave Alex a significant boost in the rankings. The 20-year-old jumped 14 spots, moving from world No. 75 to No. 61, just five spots shy of her career-high ranking of No. 55 reached earlier this year. Tennis legend Rafael Nadal, one of her mentors, even sent his congratulations, expressing pride in Alex’s achievement for herself and the Philippines.

Congrats, Alex!
