Filipino tennis fans woke up to history this week as Alex Eala clinched her first-ever Grand Slam main draw victory at the US Open. The 20-year-old tennis star stunned World No. 15 Clara Tauson in an electrifying first-round match, marking the first time a Filipino has ever won a singles match at a Grand Slam in the Open era.

Her breakthrough comes at the same venue where she lifted the US Open girls’ singles trophy in 2022, but this time the stakes are far greater. Beyond the prestige of winning on one of tennis’s biggest stages, there’s also serious money involved, with champions walking away with multi-million dollar prizes. That financial reward underscores just how much is at stake, with the 2025 US Open offering some of the biggest prize money figures in tennis history.
What Is the US Open?
The US Open is one of tennis’s crown jewels as the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year. Now in its 145th edition, the tournament takes place on the outdoor hard courts of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City. Known for its buzzing night sessions, celebrity-filled stands, and high-stakes drama, the event has long been a proving ground for legends of the sport.

While history and prestige are on the line on the court, there’s also a hefty financial reward for those who make it deep into the draw. The US Open announced a record-breaking total player compensation pool of $90 million (P5.12 billion) this year, a figure that reflects tennis’s growing global popularity.
For singles champions, both men and women stand to take home a cool $5 million (P284.4 million) each—one of the richest prizes in tennis. The runner-up doesn’t exactly leave empty-handed either, earning $2.5 million (P142.2 million), while semifinalists pocket $1.26 million (P71.6 million). Even those who bow out in the early rounds see significant payouts: players reaching the round of 128 still collect $110,000 (P6.2 million) for their efforts.

Doubles specialists are rewarded as well. Winning teams in the men’s and women’s doubles draw each split $1 million (P56.8 million), while the mixed doubles champions earn the same amount. According to Man of Many, doubles winners’ prize money jumped from $750,000 in 2024 to $1,000,000 in 2025—a 33.3% increase that highlights the growing recognition of the discipline.
In total, the 2025 purse is spread across singles, doubles, mixed doubles, and wheelchair events, reinforcing the tournament’s reputation as the most lucrative in tennis. For perspective, the singles competition alone accounts for over $31 million (P1.76 billion) in payouts.
