Shanghai is a city of contrasts, where towering skyscrapers mix with historical temples in a curious, melting pot of modernization and tradition. It’s a metropolis thriving with businesses – a place where the West meets the East in a fashionable display of what contemporary China is all about.
If you’re heading to Shanghai for personal or professional reasons, take time to look around and marvel at what the city has to offer.
Shanghai Art Museum
Considered as one of the best museums in China, the Shanghai Art Museum is a window to the country’s history. Spend hours in each wing and digest everything from intricately-made jade jewelry to the sure strokes of old calligraphy scrolls.
Dongtai Road Antique Market
If you’re looking for strange pieces and curious knick-knacks, visit Dongtai Road and indulge in interesting stalls selling everything from miniature terracotta warriors to old turntables. There are a lot of treasures hidden in displays of kitsch, so if you have a good eye and a gift for haggling, this is the place for you.
The Bund is a popular waterfront that stretches for 1.5 kilometers on the banks of the Huangpu River. From here, you can marvel at interesting Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architecture, or if you’d like a breather, you can visit one of the many restaurants in the area and watch fashionable locals pass by.
Head to Nanjing Road for the ultimate modern-day shopping experience. Stretching from east end of The Bund to the west junction of Jing’an Temple and Yan’an West Street, it’s a place of many malls and foreign boutiques. If you’re craving for the familiarity of international fast food, this is also the place to go to.
