When it comes to a range of eyeliner colors, it’s the white one that people tend to overlook. Amidst the browns, blacks, and even neons that people have learned to embrace over the years, there are still hordes of white eyeliner left unsold on top of makeup counters and shelves in malls. However, what some of you might not know is that white eyeliner is a pretty powerful tool to have in your arsenal, especially when you want to play up your eyes. It can brighten your eyes and also accentuate those colorful shades if you're game to trying out more complicated eye looks. White eyeliner is relatively easy to use, too, plus you can pile up on the intensity without it looking too heavy or dramatic!
Need proof? Check out how these Hollywood stars are adding white eyeliner to some of their best looks:
1. Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart’s makeup artist, Beau Nelson, uses the classic makeup trick of drawing white eyeliner on her waterline to brighten her eyes and make them look bigger. He accentuates this effect even further by sweeping dark shadow below her bottom lash line. When doing this, be careful that the products don’t transfer onto one another. For daily wear, you can skip the eye shadow on the bottom lash line and simply wear the white liner as is to cheat tired eyes. Line as close to the waterline as possible to avoid any gaps.
Meanwhile, Beau takes the white liner look to the red carpet by applying it on top of Kristen’s smoky eye makeup as an accent. A pencil would eventually rub off and fade, so Beau uses the Les Perles eyeliner from Chantecaille, providing a nice pearly sheen instead of a solid heavy white. The shade perfectly pairs with her rosy lip, and makes it elegant enough to wear for formal, dressier occasions.
2. Jodie Comer
English actress Jodie Comer, meanwhile, is all about the drama, wearing a perfect winged liner in white that’s sitting on top of her black liner drawn close to her lash line. Outlining the black eyeliner makes her eyes pop even further, adding dimension to this look. Drawing the attention to the shock of white on her eyes, she keeps her face painted in neutral shades everywhere else.
3. Priyanka Chopra
The Met Gala is the perfect avenue to bend and break some style rules, and when your theme is camp, everything is fair game. Priyanka Chopra is a vision with her 2019 Met makeup, donning heavy white eyeliner on her lower lids as well as on her lashes. They draw attention to Priyanka’s beautiful eyes, while contrasting the plum color on her lips at the same time.
4. Sophie Turner
Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner is taking on a different version of mod, thanks to her makeup artist Georgie Eisdell. Rocking a retro wing on her lids, instead of the usual black liner, Georgie has decided to paint on a thin layer of white eyeliner on top of her black liner, adding a neat little flick upwards to highlight her eyes even further. Sophie wears this with a sleek long ponytail and a rosy nude lip.
5. Bella Hadid
Bella Hadid looks every bit a bombshell as she adds some glam to this white eyeliner that perfectly matches her ensemble. Keeping her makeup light and neutral, Bella’s soft white eyeliner above her lids adds a pop of brightness to her face and highlights her piercing gaze. It also makes for a great daytime look if you're feeling a little extra.
6. Ashley Tisdale
Ashley Tisdale has come a long way from her sweet High School Musical days, getting rid of her golden blonde locks in favor of a chopped pink lob and an edgier, LA cool girl style. Here, she rocks a blush suit that matches her hair, and wears little makeup on her face save for the white liner she drew all over her lids. It’s a graphic look that makes her peepers pop.
We are living for this look on Rihanna by makeup artist Priscilla Ono. The pop star and Fenty Beauty mogul is rocking this skin-tone makeup to a T, including her perfect match foundation and that MLBB nude lip. The only thing that stands out is that white liner drawn on the outer corners of her eyes, upturned like a cat’s eye. It’s a tiny detail but it makes all the difference, especially on a face painted in nude makeup.
8. Cara Delevingne
The English model and actress wears sweet and romantic makeup here, a stark change from her usual portfolio of smokey eyes, dark eyeliner, and dusky lip colors. But as the newest ambassador for Dior Addict Stellar Shine Collection, Cara Delevingne is seen rocking pink. The only departure from this classically feminine look is the white cat-eye liner, still adding a certain edge to her appearance while keeping the colors light.
9. Willow Smith
White and pink make for a cool color combination, and Willow Smith is rocking the look here with graphic white eyeliner drawn on her lower eyelids, with the Dior Stellar Shine lipstick diffused here in an ombré lip. To achieve the strong eye look, makeup artist Carole Colombani drew on Willow’s lids with the Dior Show Khol pencil in White, layering it with white eye shadow to lock in the look.
10. Janelle Monae
Actress and singer Janelle Monae turned heads at the Chanel show during Paris Fashion Week with this popping graphic eyeliner look, thanks to celebrity makeup artist Vincent Oquendo. The artist went for a modern-day, Cleopatra-inspired look, outlining Janelle’s upper lids with an exaggerated cat-eye and filling them in with gold shades. Mascara and upturned false lashes also made her eyes pop even more. For a light and airy look, he kept the rest of Janelle’s face bare and coated her lips with gloss.
11. Winnie Harlow
Vincent also used the same graphic eyeliner trick on Victoria’s Secret model Winnie Harlow, but instead of overdrawing on her entire eye area, he laid it on thick on her upper lid, extending it all the way to the inner corners of her eyes. For added drama, he piled on black liquid liner on Winnie’s lash line, finishing off with mascara and falsies. The lips were also kept subdued in a rosy, natural-looking shade.
