If you were to ask anyone about their first experience of beauty, they would probably bring up their mom. There is beauty in a newborn baby’s first smile in their mother’s arms. There is also beauty in a teenager’s first time adorning their grown up smile with a specific shade of lipstick. From life philosophies to skincare routines, our moms teach us timeless lessons on being confident and carrying ourselves well. Bringing these words of wisdom with us is an opportunity to remember our moms every day, too.

For the Preview team, our moms are our first muses. They are significant contributors in the standards we hold today. We look back on the beauty tips and pieces of advice that they have passed down to us, influencing our personal approaches to life and beauty.

Preview Editors Revisit Their Early Beauty Memories From Their Moms

"The earliest memory I have of makeup is my mom sitting in front of a mirror and swiping on a red lipstick. As a little girl, I had always enjoyed watching her put on makeup, and when she'd leave for work, I would secretly try on the products on her vanity table. My mom has always loved a bold red lipstick, and she'd let me wear hers whenever there are special school events like pageants or graduations. So even now as a grownup, a red lipstick has that effect on me—it feels like an extra boost of confidence from my mom."

"My mom brought me to a salon in my early days in high school to get my bushy eyebrows threaded. They were not in style back then, and I [would] usually hide them behind full bangs, which didn't flatter me.

She told me that eyebrows frame your face and can dramatically change your appearance. That trip to the salon changed my outlook. I could turn a feature I didn't like into an asset—with the right know-how and tools."

"One beauty tip I learned from my mom is using hair mousse to define and hold our natural curls. We both have wavy hair, and she taught me early on how mousse helps control frizz while keeping our waves bouncy and soft. It's a simple step, but it always makes me feel more put-together—just like she always does."

"As a kid, I grew up seeing my mom lather herself in some white scented lotion before heading to bed. I can't recall the name of the lotion or what benefits it had to her skin, but I distinctly remember the smell, which was reminiscent of sampaguitas. After she retired, my mom became pretty hands-off with her beauty regimens, since, in her words, 'Nandito lang naman ako sa bahay.'

Though, one thing that's remained a mainstay in her routine despite the lifestyle change is Clinique's Facial Soap. This is her go-to cleanser during showers, and I've made a habit of stealing a few squeezes during my own baths (LOL). It's mild and light on the skin, but leaves it feeling refreshed after a rinse. She stocks up on this religiously, even packing it along during our out of the country trips. And yes, she seals the lid shut with duct tape lest it somehow spills in our checked-in luggage. That's just Filipino mom things for you."

"When I was a kid, my mom would do my makeup for my performances in school. She would always use blue mascara, and it made for a great conversation starter between me and my friends. It’s one of the reasons why I knew early on that makeup was a creative outlet. When I grew older, mascara would remain in her makeup kit (although, the blue was no longer a staple). She often used mascara, not only for her eyelashes, but also for her eyebrows. My mom has always been smart and resourceful, and this reflected even in her routine."

"For the longest time, I think I have always watched my mom put on lipstick before we leave the house. She would always tell me to apply and reapply throughout the day because 'a little lipstick can go a long way,' and some color can make a girl's face look more awake or alive. One day, I saw that me, my older sister, and my mom all had the same exact Happy Skin Shut Up & Kiss Me Moisturizing Matte Lippie, just in different shades, and that made my day."
