People with kayumanggi skin like Filipinos didn’t always have media personalities to look up to. For some time, there were no viral or visible beauty routines that we could confidently pattern ours after. This lack of representation, fortunately, didn’t go unnoticed. Patrick Simondac—who you might know as Patrick Starrr—decided to launch his YouTube channel in 2013, making him the first male Filipino-American beauty influencer.

The OG beauty guru, who currently has 4.8 million subscribers on YouTube and 4.2 million followers on Instagram, kept this quest for representation close to his heart. It is the same driving force that propels his own beauty brand, One/Size, forward.

About the Brand

A Bite-Sized History of One/Size

In 2017, Patrick announced that he was chosen by MAC Cosmetics as their key artist collaborator. He released a 12-piece collection under the brand. It was a full-circle moment—in case you didn't know, before becoming a full-time creator, he was actually a MAC artist for weddings and live demonstrations!

Patrick told the Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP) in 2021 that the thought of creating his own brand crossed his mind after the said collaboration. Having celebrities like Kris Aquino, Kim Kardashian, Tyra Banks, and Paris Hilton reach out to him about wanting to try his products certainly ignited a spark.

From being a respected YouTuber to having global personalities like Pia Wurtzbach, Katy Perry, and more grace his makeup chair, Patrick added “founder” to his glamorous list of achievements. One/Size was established in 2020.

The initial launch didn’t go as planned, as the worldwide pandemic hit shortly after. With this, he had to pivot to creating a team and building the brand virtually. Surely, his years of presence and experience in the digital world provided an edge.

What Is One/Size at Its Core?

“I wanted to develop a makeup brand that combines function with fashion, [through] essential, everyday products that are elevated and fun for anyone to use, from beginners to professionals,” Patrick tells Glossy in a 2022 interview. “I wanted to create a brand where everyone, regardless of who you are or what you look like, feels welcome and celebrated for their individuality and expression.”

Patrick set out on a mission to break the chain that has been holding people like him back. That mission had been established from the very moment he pressed “record” for his first YouTube video. The name One/Size occurred to the 36-year-old naturally, tracing all the way back to 2016.

He told PEP that he was shopping for clothes and “nothing could fit me in the store.” At that moment, the experience led him to say, “I can’t buy anything in here. But I can buy make-up because makeup is a one-size-fits-all,” and it clicked.

“I trademarked that tagline in 2016 and I didn't know what I was gonna do with it." Four years later, and it was the final piece of the puzzle as Patrick geared up for his beauty brand’s launch.

Today, One/Size takes pride in amplifying the voices of every person in the beauty community. As explained on their official website, “This is for all the curvy women, skinny boys, drag queens, thick guys, girly girls, beauties with disabilities, gender nonconforming icons, runway models, and makeup lovers,” making One/Size “a beauty brand for every brand of beauty.”

Patrick has always been committed to his cause. In fact, he earned an esthetician license “to ensure all products would work,” even for sensitive skin like his. With this, their innovative formulas are all backed by science and designed to meet various needs.
