In tropical countries like the Philippines, a swarm of mosquitoes isn’t limited to summertime. Our warm, humid climate creates ideal conditions for them to thrive all year long. Certain factors—such as body temperature and even blood type—can also make some individuals more prone to bites. If this sounds familiar (or if you simply want to avoid attracting mosquitoes altogether), read on for five essentials worth adding to your daily routine.

Multi-tasking products are all the rage—and for good reason. The Sun People’s Sun + Bug Shield, in particular, protects the skin from mosquitoes, sand mites, and harmful sunrays. The lightweight mineral sunscreen boasts SPF 50+ PA++++, and is packed in a mist bottle for easy reapplication on the face and the body throughout the day.

A cult-favorite repellent, Off lotions give superior protection against the troubling insects. The Overtime Insect Repellent variant provides up to nine hours of defense. It was also formulated to be cool and light on the skin, maintaining that fresh feeling throughout the day.

Sometimes, you won’t even notice you were already bitten until you subconsciously start scratching an itch. In cases like such, Grandma Minnie’s The Big, Brave, Boo-boo Balm from VMV Hypoallergenics will kiss it goodbye. With virgin coconut oil at its center, it gently soothes stressed, dry, and itchy skin.

Filling your space with scents mosquitoes hate (but humans love) can certainly help, too. Scentsmith Perfumery makes achieving this easier through the Mr. & Mrs. Smith Bundle, which comes with a small humidifier adorned in either dark or light wood, an aroma oil, and an aroma mist. Needless to say, there are various scents to choose from, but opting for known repellents like Lavandin Eucalyptus may be the best way to go.

In true Filipino fashion, candles are a go-to item for keeping mosquitoes away. Lighting the Twisted Peppermint Candle from Bath & Body Works will certainly encourage them to move farther, with peppermint being a tried and tested repellent. With a high concentration of rich oils, the three-wick candle fills the room with a refreshing scent for hours on end.
