Applying foundation with a spatula is having a moment on the internet. And no, we aren’t talking about the type of spatula you’d see in the kitchen. We’re talking about makeup spatulas. Now if you’re having trouble picturing what it looks like, these are stainless steel tools that have a similarity to painting knives. Makeup spatuals are smaller and have a blunt rectangular shape. It was originally meant to help you take out makeup products from containers. But, thanks to Korean makeup artists makeup spatulas are now being used to apply foundation.
Hyemin Jo, the makeup artist for K-drama actresses like Song Ji-Hyo, uses makeup spatulas to apply foundation. In an Instagram post, she explained why she does this technique, saying that it will create a firm and smooth complexion. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how she does it:
LOOK: Here’s how to properly apply foundation with a spatula
She starts by creating a clean base by getting rid of residue and dirt on her face with a cleaning wipe.
She then picks up the liquid foundation with the spatula, evenly coating the edge. Then holding the spatula vertically next to her face, she starts to spread it outwards.
Once spread, she takes a damp sponge or beauty blender and pats the foundation in.
She then gets a small applicator brush to apply concealer on certain problem spots. The result? An evenly spread, smooth, and glass skin look.
