How to Style a Black Turtleneck for Any Occasion

How to Style a Black Turtleneck for Any Occasion
We think it's the most versatile piece ever.

I've been a staunch advocate of the black turtleneck's versatility for eons. Ever since I discovered its simultaneously transformative and subduing power during my first few months with Preview nearly six years ago, I have never once doubted it, nor have I ever looked backjust ask the rest of the ladies at Preview HQ, who are always the first to stop me from buying yet another iteration of the same damn thing. It's just irrevocably essential to my wardrobe. And, like, to my life.

As owner to approximately 30 kinds (ribbed, loose, knitted, sheer, sequined, lacy, cropped, thermal...), I can't help but feel that it's my duty to share the gospel and round up 25 chic ways you can style yours for absolutely any occasion on God's good, green earth. Here you go!

1. Sarah Lahbati's sexy cut-out midi dress version (from the coveted new Bottega Veneta, no less) is your sultry yet sleek dinner date bet. Oops, and don't forget to grab your ivory Pouch on your way out.

2. This lewk is exactly what you'll always need nice dark toned lingerie for. Don't you dare skimp on your delicate whispers! Heart Evangelista's Dion Lee number quite literally sees right through you.

3. Take Kim Jones' chunky pullover and pencil skirt OOTD from your work desk to happy hour to your next cold-weather jaunt abroad. A monogrammed Louis Vuitton Boite Chapeau and slick, patent cherry Fendi boots are the only add-ons necessary.

4. Ah, the sobering impact of some really great tailored trousers. Buy 'em loose to emulate languid Audrey Hepburn on a lazy Saturday, or snag them cropped like Janine Gutierrez's so they'll look just as ace in the office as they do on an evening painting the town red.

5. If you're flying off soon, now's the time to finally sample the much-feared dress-over-pants look. Let Camille Co be your expert guide: Her key lies in choosing structured, architectural silhouettes that are extra intentional. Oh, and a generous dash of LV can't hurt.

6. Trust reigning queen of double, triple, and quadruple denim Liz Uy to have a luxe spin up her Zucca-streaked sleeve. We honestly have yet to try tucking our jeans into knee boots, but she's making a very strong case for taking the plunge.

7. We're craaazy about Kirin, fashion designer and DJ Peggy Gou's ultra-cool label. How fun is Laureen Uy's logo-splashed bowler shirt? Paired with a bucket hat and a funky beaded sunglasses chain, her combo is the coolest for miles 'round.

8. No one ever said you should shy away from print! Have all the smashin', clashin' fun you want, chides Martine Cajucom Ho, whose uniform of choice lately, apart from frilly Batsheva frocks and bejeweled velcro Cecilie Bahnsen platform sandals, is the figure skimmine onesie.

9. The lust we feel for those adorable little Clueless-flavored tweed skirt suits that are gaining serious traction right now is real. Pia Wurtzbach is only fanning the flame in this cute, dainty monochrome checked set and prim white Lady Dior bag. A true royal flush.

10. Should the #scumbro cum street likes of Grammy-sweeper Billie Eilish and Issa Pressman be your peg, cop authentic, logo emblazoned fangirl merch that'll spin your daily basics towards the cool kids on the block. Bad guy, fire 'fit. Faux fur coat optional.

11. Hate baring your arms? Jennie Kim of wildly popular K-pop girl group Blackpink has a brilliant trick to covering up without a single hitch. The idea is to layer your fave, no-fail sweater under a strapless minidress, then string a strand of Chanel pearls around your neck for a posh bit of polish. Throw on the sweet plush velvet headband you loved in your childhood, too. It's so in lately.

12. And when we said "absolutely any occasion on God's good, green earth" we 100% meant it. Behold, Lovi Poe is a living, breathing statement in the affirmative! There's no way you could have forgotten the majestic Mark Bumgarner ballgown she wore to Vicki Belo and Hayden Kho's decadent Paris wedding. Emulate the grandeur by simply tossing a big tulle ball skirt over the exact same knit you don to your usual nine to five. Instant Hollywood glamour. Hacks.
