If you haven't seen the newest season of Queer Eye already (and you really should), one constant theme throughout its eight episodes is the importance of self-care and self-love. So, of course, when we had the chance to have an exclusive sit-down phone interview with the Fab 3 (Karamo Brown and Bobby Berk unfortunately weren't able to join in), we just had to ask them for their own personal self-care tips.
The ever fabulous Jonathan Van Ness, who was particularly chirpy at 7 a.m., as Tan just had to point out, advocated for a little R&R in the tub. "A self-care tip for me would be to either take a gorgeous bath 'cause baths really help calm me down and relax me," Jonathan tells us. "But if you're not a bath taker, try a little meditation!" As for our food junkie Antoni Porowski? "My self-care tip is one that I'm learning in my 30s," he reveals. "It's learning how important it is to sleep eight hours every night. It really helps my day."
But perhaps the tip that we could most relate to was that of the perpetually stylish Tan France's take on trends and staying true to who you are. "My self-care tip is to always feel better about yourself and your style. Don't try to copy what the others are doing if that's not truly who you are," Tan tells Preview. "I think trends are fine, but don't go for trends if it doesn't feel like it's the real version of you. If you are more classic and you know that, you don't have to be somebody who desperately chases a trend. Go for something authentic to you, you're gonna feel better about yourself."
We couldn't agree more, Tan! But while dressing according to your authentic self is of utmost importance in keeping a happy and positive disposition, it also won't hurt to ask for a few fail-safe tips along the way. Which is why, as the summer season settles in, we couldn't help but ask the show's fashion guru for a few tips to dressing comfortably stylish given our humid weather.
Here are Tan's style tips!
1. Find your hero piece.
If you watch the show at all, you'll know that Tan is a sucker for layers, having dressed up his subjects with a fair share of blazers and bomber jackets through the course of three seasons. But of course, unless you really have that "beauty is pain attitude," just the thought of layering in this humid weather is practically unbearable, even Tan admits that. "It's harder to dress in the summer because you don't have layers. I personally prefer layers to make into an interesting look."
So his solution to this anti-jacket season? "Find that one item that you think can be a stand-out piece, and still build an outfit around it," Tan tells Preview. "I call it my 'hero' piece." Whether it's a wide-brimmed hat like Camille Co's, or Liz Uy's fishnet skirt, your hero piece is sure to save you from any summer-induced heat styling slump.
2. Invest in foot spray.
Open sandals are ideal for the summer, but for Tan, nothing allows you to look more polished and put together than closed-toe shoes. But then again, no one wants sweaty feet by the end of the day, which is why our favorite fab guy recommends you save up on some grade-A foot spray. "I think a closed toe shoe is great but it gets very hot and you want to be comfortable all day, so invest in a good foot spray that's gonna keep you comfortable," Tan explains.
3. Love, love, love color!
We've all heard of sticking to white for the summer, but for Tan, it's all about color! "It's summer, embrace color," he reiterates. "Enjoy your black in the fall-winter [seasons]. Be playful, comfy, and wear something to actually enjoy!"
Not a big fan of color? How about you balance it out with a neutral-hued piece, like Heart Evangelista below. Or try out a two-tone look like Laureen Uy.
