2019 was the year of luxury streetwear. Just look at brands like Off-White, Louis Vuitton, and Vetements for prime examples. But the popularity of streetwear was obviously bound to happen, given the trend's early start in 2017. Aside from the overwhelming slew of designer streetwear that came our way this year, there was one unicorn trend that surprisingly became an instant hit: the micro bag trend.
Since Jacquemus unveiled the Le Chiquito bag in its Spring/Summer 2018 collection, fashion girls everywhere ate it up, and even celebrities like Lizzo have sported the trend on the red carpet. More tiny bags were also revealed during the brand's Spring/Summer 2020 show, proof that the trend isn't going anywhere.
That said, there is another bag trend that might just (we're kind of praying it does) eclipse the micro bag trend: oversized bags! While majority of the fashion world gravitated towards Jacquemus and other smaller-than-your-palm offerings, others turned up their noses and looked the other way—the more practical route, that is. Some street style stars were seen in recent months sporting extra large clutch bags, like the pouches from Bottega Veneta, and tote bags, like Dior's Book Tote. Another favorite is Proenza Schouler's PS 19 bag that's so big you can probably stuff it with everything on your work desk. Yup, even your laptop.
Check out how style mavens have donned the trend below:
Honestly, we're slightly relieved that oversized bags might make a comeback. For one, we can actually fit our belongings inside the bag, aside from the spare change and tissues we've been stuffing our micro bags with. This also means that we can lug around our roomy totes from the office to dressier occasions without people looking at us like we're workaholics—if they do, well, they probably don't know what's in season.
