For decades, menswear has been closely tied to long-standing conventions. It is a discipline defined by precision and structure. In recent seasons, however, a noticeable shift has emerged within the category, one that increasingly favors practicality and a departure from some of its most established codes.

During the recent Spring/Summer 2027 menswear fashion week, John Lozano, Preview's 2026 Best Dressed honoree and this season's fashion correspondent, traveled to Paris and Milan, where he got a first look at upcoming collections from houses including Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, Zegna, and Tod’s, among others.

Having seen the collections up close and the finer details of the garments, the seasoned stylist observed that menswear sensibilities are steadily moving toward pieces that feel purposeful rather than purely performative. “Most of the collections veered away from over-embellishment and the avant-garde to pave the way for more wearable pieces,” he pointed out.

Elsewhere, John—who also oversees the staging of MNL Fashion Week—notes a broader transformation in the way fashion shows themselves are approached. “Fashion now is not as stiff as before, where the shows determine where trends are heading. It’s more a reflection of the current state rather than a prediction of what’s to come,” he explained.

“One thing for certain in the recently concluded fashion week: men’s fashion is becoming more practical and wearable, which simply means it’s truly a growing market—and it will continue to grow in the years to come.”

Ahead, John zeroes in on the collections that stood out to him during the latest menswear season, sharing observations and takeaways from the presentations he witnessed firsthand.

Tod's

John: “For this season, Tod's stayed true to their signature aesthetic, focusing on craftsmanship and premium materials. Set in Villa Necchi Campiglio, a true Italian house turned museum, Tod's wanted to solidify its position as the true Italian wardrobe, with pieces spread out in different rooms mimicking a huge closet.”

Ralph Lauren

John: “On its second showing in Milan in 20 years, Ralph Lauren and Polo by Ralph Lauren reminded us of how classics, when styled right, can feel fresh again. Sticking to its color palette and aesthetic while adding subtle feminine touches like scarf ties and Edwardian collars, Ralph Lauren has managed to modernize its heritage looks and pieces. Polo, on the other hand, was a masterclass in styling. It just shows that colors, no matter the combo, if styled properly, can look chic.”

Zegna

John: “A closer look at the pieces from their recent Malibu show revealed the craftsmanship of the brand with its signature details. But what's noteworthy is the play on color, which Zegna is not necessarily known for. The bold choices of color this season- yellows, teals, and oranges- really brought new life to the brand, and it surely made the collection super exciting!”

Louis Vuitton

John: “For menswear this season it's all about practicality. Most of the collections veered away from over-embellishment and the avant-garde to pave the way for more wearable pieces. This is best seen in the recent collection of Louis Vuitton by Pharrell. In previous seasons, they have released either hyper-thematic collections or ultra-luxe pieces that may not be as marketable. This season, although there's a theme, the theme itself is surf and skate, two concepts that are quite sellable and commercial.”
