British actress Maisie Williams is always game to change up her look. After her stint as Arya Stark on the hit HBO series Game of Thrones, the 24-year-old has been experimenting with different beauty looks. She’s tried cotton-candy pink hair, dyed her tresses platinum blonde, and has even sported the ever-popular “Wolf Cut” recently. But her latest transformation might be her most drastic one yet.

The actress was invited to this year’s MET Gala and looked totally unrecognizable with bleached brows and stark black hair! The look is a complete contrast to her fun and playful style when it comes to red carpet dressing. But maybe that was the point.

Designed by Maisie herself and her boyfriend Reuben Selby, the frock features a sheer leotard that covered her arms and legs, and layered under a black bodysuit adorned with oversized bows and an embellished train. In an interview with The Mirror, the actress said it was inspired by The Matrix. “I have my coat and my Matrix nails. I've grown up on these American icons—women in film, these heroines.”

But it was her hair and makeup that really sold the look. The dotted cat eye and severe dark lip could be loosely inspired by the gothic beauty trend of the ‘90s. Remember’s Madonna’s look in her music video Frozen? You can even say there’s even a touch of Edward Scissorhands somewhere there, too! But whatever the exact beauty inspo is, it definitely references a lot of iconic American pop culture figures.
